Chest X-Ray breakdown: looking for difficult lung nodules

A female smoker in her 50s presents with a cough and has a chest X-Ray. What does it show?

OBSCURED LUNG NODULE
👨🏽‍💻This X-Ray is all about spotting nodules in tricky areas. If the nodule had been slightly higher or lower this would have been an easy spot but given it was behind the clavicle means it was a lot more tricky

👨🏽‍💻 Some review areas on chest X-Ray need you to assess the central structures but when looking at the lungs it is better to review each side by side

👨🏽‍💻 One strategy I use is to make the X-Ray small by zooming out which makes it easier to compare each side and make sure that things are fairly symmetrical

👨🏽‍💻One other trick I use is to invert the film which gives you another perspective and in this case I feel helps in spotting the lung nodule

👨🏽‍💻 Spotting lung nodules is really important. If this one hadn’t have been spotted, this lung would potentially have grown and metastasised meaning the patient wouldn’t have been able to have curative treatment. As it was, however it was thankfully picked up and the patient is currently in remission
