What's Wrong With Voluntarism (i.e. with Arbitrary Morality)

I was asked to do a video about voluntarism. I plan to eventually do a scripted video with a more thorough treatment, but here are some initial thoughts.

Just fyi, he's not talking about Voluntarism as in the philosophy based on self-ownership, the Non-Aggression Principle, the idea that all human interaction/associations should be voluntary (as opposed to coercive). He's talking about theology which is a completely separate subject. Some sort of disclaimer or explanation of this might have been helpful to clarify in the video itself for people wondering in or who have searched the term and this popped up. I only say this because I'm a Voluntarist in the philosophical sense and I was thinking "wtf is he on about?" in the beginning of the video.

Thank you Christopher! I had misunderstood the entire concept. No wonder I had problems nailing down what was wrong with voluntarism. I’m now better armed to argue against it. May God bless you even more.

So I was arguing on another channel with someone that disrespect is objective and not just a feeling. When asking him to give his argument as to why it isn't, he brought up that "skeptic" talking point that he doesn't have to because he is simply arguing against me. I tried to point out how logically a negative proposition can be constructed to say the same thing while being "positive" and gave him an example. My hope was that outside the context of religion a "skeptic" could see why this isn't a valid tactic. Unfortunately, my hope was in vain. He just deflected and denied, continuing to believe that he was in the right.

Theosis... your quote was from st Athanasius' On the Incarnation. And it seems to me that voluntarism, nominalism, and univocity are all linked with each other. And in fact, Luther is reacting to a form of of this which sparked the reformation.

What you described has nothing to do with any voluntarist I’ve ever heard of. This is a crazy strawman. Voluntarism has nothing to do with anything you said. Maybe we are talking about completely different groups. Does this have anything to do with the principal?

Nowadays, people seem to think that morality and the Intellect are entirely different things; it' s as though "Morality" is floating out there in the void somewhere, irrespective of human considerations- this is why people often say that you need the Bible to have an objective morality. And I suspect that this is why there are so many moral relativists these days; if morality is something we invented, then at least it's something we can understand!

So... If Voluntarism is the separating of Intellect from the Will; wouldn't this be the same sort of error?- particularly if this is primarily about morality!

I was kind of brought up on such an idea (or maybe that was my own misunderstanding), so that's why I'm interested.
