I used to study in China they don't really care where you go if you have residency permit and you don't spend more than a week in remote and sus area. But if you're holding tourists visa and check into hotel but decided to go somewhere else without properly check out and check in within 2 days. They will track you down.

this is an old law that never get update, when this law was made, there was only few hundreds foreigners in china, and police don't have computer or Internet. back then even Chinese people travel to another part of china need to register with the local police. and back then we didn't have ID cards, instead people rely on 'letter of introduction' to show identity.

Sounds like the IRS. Yes we know how much you earn and how much you owe but you didn't file to tell us😮

I remember having to show my passport, before I was allowed to buy a train ticket.

Seems legit. I never had to deal with this 12+ years ago. It was a requirement iirc, I just never did it.

At least it’s an option to go and register, here in my neck of the woods they just resorted to just monitoring everyone’s online activity despite of the person(s) wishes

While I get the main idea of this and what everyone is saying I sometimes have thoughts in my head just wondering about things. Like I wonder if it’s ever to help in keeping ppl “honest” & if they have a system of using someone who didn’t come right in within 24 hrs in a yellow category for mid risk then sizing them and their behaviors up when they come in deciding if they act funny if so putting them in an orange category and so on which is a way to kinda monitor and have a system of anyone they think is suspicious or possible spies or enemies. I’m not a full fledged conspiracy theorist but I also am not full fledged the government doesn’t lie to us or do things right in front of us and lie right to us either but rather in the middle and know what we think we know isn’t the full of it and the truth would keep us up at night!!

I guess I don't understand? Do they just want to lay eyes on you or get a stamp or something? What are you supposed to sign? "Yes, I'm here signing this."?

You would be better off learning it in pieces and getting it right than playing the whole thing wrong.
