How to Install Any App on iOS 5.1.1 or Older - (ipad First Gen)

Note: this video was made over 3 years ago. Since that time, it appears that this method may not work for some apps, particularly those with more intensive requirements. If you need to use intensive applications like GarageBand for example, you will likely need a newer device.

If you're getting the error "This app is incompatible with this iPad", it means the publisher of the app has removed the older version that was compatible with iOS 5 from the App Store (or it was never published with iOS 5 support in the first place). Also, you're downloading an old version of the app, so some features in the app might not work anymore.

Worked for me! I got my toddler a 1st gen iPad mini to keep her entertained on long drives and while we take a 7 hour flight later this year, and I needed to download Netflix! You’re a lifesaver! I thought I wasted 50$!

Thanks Aleks, this is important information. I'd worked out that you could download already purchased apps, but not that you could use a newer device to install additional ones. This has made my hand-me-down ipad a much more valuable and useful device.

Awesome! It worked. Thanks So Much! Now all(5) of our Ipad Gen 3 devices can run Netflix and DirecTV apps. You have saved us from horrible eye strain trying to watch on our Iphones and stoppped me from spending thousands of $$$ upgrading our Ipads to newer models. YIPPEE! Just one extra twist; My wife had not previously downloaded Netflix on her iPad, but I had on mine. So I added her as 'Family' and then she could access my previous Netflix purchase on her ipad.

You're a life saver!! Had to factory reset my Ipad2 and Netflix wasn't playing nice. I was able to do the Purchase history trick from the same device too.

It did not work with every app, still I was able to install many apps that were impossible before. Thank you so much. And shame on Apple for being such scumbags as to not putting this option upon installing any app in the first place

Unfortunately, for GarageBand (available for iPad 1 at the time of first release) your solution doesn't work. After all the manipulations it shows the app among the purchased ones but says "this app is incompatible with this ipad".
