Step 1 -- Enter network location

First of all, open the start menu and in the search bar, enter the network location before you hit the enter key.

Step 2 -- Connect to printer

When the network window will open up, right click on the printer and select the connect option.

Step 3 -- View error

A pop-up window of Add printer will appear and it will inform you that "Windows cannot connect to the printer". Click on the see details and you will see "Operation failed with error 0x00000057".

Step 4 -- Go to Devices and Printers

Let us try to resolve this error and properly add the shared printer. Go back to the start menu and then click on Devices and Printers.

Step 5 -- Add a printer button

In the Devices and Printers window, click on the Add a Printer button at the top.

Step 6 -- Create a new port

As a result, a new window will appear on your screen. Over there, you will see two options; use an existing port or create a new port. For the purpose of this tutorial, we will choose the Create a new port option. Click on the Next button to continue.

Step 7 -- Enter network location

You will then be prompted to provide the Port name. Enter the network location followed by the shared printer name and then click on the Ok button.

Step 8 -- Select the printer's manufacturer

In the next window, select the printer's manufacturer and its model. Once you are done, click on the Next button.

Step 9 -- Type a printer name

In the next screen, you will be asked to type in the Printer's name. Once you are done, continue further.

Step 10 -- Printer added successfully

You will be notified that you've successfully added your printer. Click on the Finish button in order to exit. In this manner, the blue screen of death stop error 0x00000057 will be resolved and your network printer will be successfully added.

Log into PC as admin.  Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Print management.  Expand Print Servers, PC Name (local). Select Drivers and right click on the printer's driver that's failing and select Remove Driver Package.  May need to bounce spooler service.  Add shared printer.

Doesn't work on Windows 10. I'm just stuck in the 'Type a Printer Name' screen...clicking next just reloads that screen.

You've got to be kidding me. This doesn't "fix the problem". This is a work around!!

I call BS. This adds the printer as a local printer directly connected to the client PC. The benefit of having a centralized print server is negated in this scenario. True- it bypasses the error but I can do it the same way by adding the printer dicertly to the PC via ip address

gracias la unica solucion que me sirvio fue Inicie sesión en PC como administrador. Ir a Panel de control, Herramientas administrativas, Administración de impresión. Expanda servidores de impresión, nombre del PC (local). Seleccione Controladores y haga clic derecho en el controlador de la impresora que está fallando y seleccione Quitar Driver Package. Puede que tenga que botar servicio de cola. Añadir impresora compartida.

I got this error message when trying to install the printer drivers. I found this solution on "thebraveadmin" blog and it worked for me:

*Take ownership of and remove:

infcache.1
infpub.dat
infstor.dat
infstrng.dat

Try installing the printer again.

I work in the printer/copier industry and I know the real fix for this problem.  I swear on my life I do, but it is not easy to figure out.  If you google this error, you will find message forums that show you how to copy the broken oem folder into the driver store.  This method works, but is a nightmare to do in most environments because the driver store is controlled by the system account, so you have to change a bunch of permissions in order to copy the folder into the driver store.  But my fix, is the very best way of doing it.  I'm not going to post a video, but if someone replies to this comment I will explain how to do it.  My fix is NOT A WORKAROUND, it's the real way of fixing it.
