Fun fact: The loudest sound ever heard by humans in recorded history occurred during the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883, among the largest eruptions in modern history. The explosion occurred at roughly 10:00 in the morning, and was the final cataclysmic explosion that tore apart 12 square miles of the island, dumping all that material into the sea, triggering tsunami 130ft/40m high. The sound was a recorded 180 decibels, shattering the ear drums of people stationed on ships close to the volcano, and the same for everyone within a 40 mile radius. The shockwave travelled round the planet 7 times, and was heard as far away as Rodrigues Island in the Indian Ocean. Pretty powerful stuff!

Before I start, I'll put my headphones on a very low level, just in case.

If it were possible for there to be sound in space, just theoretically, would a super nova be extremely loud or even what sounds could we make out? I mean there's no way for there to be sound in space but really, I wonder how loud space would be

Hey, Vsauce - if Magnetar SGR 1806-20's self-adjustment was recorded in 2004, and it happened 50, 000 light years away, that means that the event must have actually occurred around 48, 000 BCE! :P Love you!

I was watching a special on Mt Krakatoa that erupted several hundred years ago.  They said the shockwave from that bursts sailors eardrums out from several hundred miles away.

Technically speaking a tree is always falling in space because when an object is in space it is falling as fast as the earth is turning away from it
