Retired university prof here....I Definitely decorate in the DARK ACADEMICIA style! Friends have termed it, "Harry Potter goes to Mardi Gras".

You know, I had originally named my interior design style "Grandma used Grandpa's life insurance money to renovate the house but kept all her old s***", but "Grand Millennial" sounds much classier.

This video looked like a LOT of time, research and effort when into making it. Thank you for a well thought out and complete explanation of design styles. You are the best!

"Monochromatic" is a useful aesthetic and can be quite beautiful when done correctly. A friend of mine has a VERY eclectic personal style when it comes to collecting furniture (Victorian chairs, MCM sofa, Louis XV bedroom, etc.) To tame all of this mess, he reupholstered EVERYTHING in the same cream-colored raw silk, painted a lot of the wood pieces black, and then painted every wall in his house dark taupe. The effect was fantastic. His place went from thrift-shop-chaos to magazine-perfect almost instantaneously.

Personally I think mixing & matching is the way to go. Some design styles I think only work in magazines, so taking various elements of multiple design styles is much more practical (assuming the mixing is done well).

Bibliophile here, so I am very partial to Dark Academia. Monochromatic would be my next favorite. I collect things so minimalist designs don’t really work for me, however, maximalist might be a tad much. Very informative video thank you.

Vintage Revival is my favorite, but I also love Dark Academia for all the books. My house is so small and the lighting is so poor that attempting Dark Academia at home would make it look and feel like I lived in a cave, but I love it in other people's homes!

My goal is a variant of Spanish revival. That would be a style I'd love you to go over! Still popular in the southwest but hard to find in stores. White walls, dark wood, terracotta and colorful art. We have a TON of books and I am an academic, but I like it light, not dark, so light academic? 😅 White walls with colorful art and comfortable furniture. Probably some version of eclectic but with that Spanish/Mediterranean vibe.

Having inherited many beautiful antiques and art work, our home definitely has a mix of vintage and grand millennial. I love wallpaper, and have used it in my kitchen, dining room and bathrooms. For us this means having a comfortable home with beautiful pieces we are proud to own. I like to craft, so I'm so thankful for this channel.... because your DIY projects always have a sophisticated look to them!!

I’m so happy color is back!! I never liked the white, grey look! Course, we all can style our homes the way we love them, in “Vogue” or not!

Chinoiserie??? I’m seeing it a lot and I (oddly enough) like it. I’m doing black kitchen cabinets and neutral modern furniture with color in the rugs, curtains, and accent furniture. Loving the lacquered dressers. I consider it Modern Chinoiserie chic. I also love a dramatic “powder room”.

My boyfriend and I are in the middle of re-designing the house, and the bedroom is like a mix of several of these styles! We're calling it "moody eclectic" but we went with "dark knight" by sherwin williams for the walls (super dark blue), there's a beautiful stained wood sliding barn door into the bathroom that came with the house, we've got a dark brown leather headboard, we're going to add dark velvet curtains coming down from the vaulted ceilings, a beautiful patterened cowhide rug on the floor, some luxurious looking sheets on the bed, we just bought this glamorous chandelier, and we're going to have some really eclectic, dark art on the walls. Sort of like a dark glam academia meets dark boho (leather/wood/rattan/plants) - Love that you dove into these styles!

Fun fun fun! I've been into rustic modern natural space for a while now. At over 60 I've been there done that throughout my lifetime and after downsizing I just want to be cozy and chill. Thanks for the update, it's great fun to watch!

I add the Wabi Sabi element of imperfection to any space as soon as I enter it...:-)

I’m getting ready to watch the video but wanted to comment because you mentioned Wabi Sabi in the description. There’s a YT channel called Wabi Sabi and it’s a young couple with a new baby in Canada that for the last several years has been renovating an old farmhouse! I think it was their grandparents home. I love the channel and his editing is amazing! Just wanted to share in case someone might be interested in checking out their channel.

Omg! I've been Grand Millenial my whole life (I'm 60) and never knew it!
Awesome video, Drew!! 💙

I enjoyed this video I guess I have elements of many of these styles as I have been married for 47 years and we have had seven homes. Things change for me to match the style of the home, but certain things that I love stand the test of time. I have lived in two Victorian houses, a country ranch, a new modern build, a small town ranch, a large Craftsman ranch...in that order, and now a 1965 stone cottage. If you develop your own style you can adapt.

So...I'm a 90 year old MAXIMILIST lady living with my 90 year old handsome Prince for 70 years. If that alone isnt amazing enough....he is a MINIMALIST! Mostly I happily bring treasures into our home and he drags them all out again. So happy to run across your video. There is always something new to learn....and in watching and listening to you....I find my style is "granny chic" enhanced by "wabi sabi". At long last...a label to my "so Fifties...Sixties now Two Thousandies ...mix of old and new. Thanks for making me feel somewhere in the home fashion of today.
Sadly...the next generations are not collectors...I wonder who will want to collect anything more than will fit in their car or van?
How refreshing to watch and listen to a young person with knowledge and interest. I will catching up on your past videos...thank you.
