People think cyber security is easy, it aint. You explained it properly so I thank you for that. My message to people who want to get into cyber security, start in helpdesk because you will not survive if you dont understand the fundamentals. The higher level the job the more you will need to do. Yes its cool to be a sysadmin or cyber security person, but have you put in the work. Dont let this stop you tho, if you can honestly say you understand networking, servers, virtualization, containerization, cloud computing and programming properly then by all means apply. I do believe that there should be a test during the interview to have the individual show they know what they say they do, so many fakers it makes it harder for the people who are who they say they are. Its cool tho because the company will get rid of the individual and they will end up in helpdesk since they need experience. Yes its possible to get a job in the area, but the right way to do it is to start from the bottom, and dont let salary fool you also, people who earn alot know alot. Anyways just wanted to express this. I wish the people who actually work hard a successful career in IT, and to those who fake it, you will learn it eventually.

I’m working at a Helpdesk now. The knowledge and experience I’m getting is unbelievable. My Section Chief told me stay there for a year and then things will open up for me. September 19 will be 1 year. Kevtech helped me getting my first Active Directory lab and it helped me get this job.

NIce one Kevin, I know someone who started in Helpdesk and now is CIO of a multi national. You have to start somewhere, then you need to learn and grow from that.

Good points Kevin. I think it depends on the company. My current company allows me to do more than just tickets. This helps diversify my skillsets.

Hey Kevin! I watch your videos often, they're very informative. I know what it is to get your hustle on coming from the Bronx. Thanks for everything you do from one native New Yorker to another.. I often think of changing my career, but I make good money where I'm at. My plan is to keep absorbing all that I can and maybe get a job when I go semi retirement.. I work 70 hrs a week now. The most important thing here is I really love to figure out what is wrong and fix the problem. I seem to gravitate on the linux platform, but I know Windows is essential.. Thanks for all that you do..

You have to start somewhere in IT. You have to gain experience wherever you can to move where you want.

Hey there Kev! Great video, straight and on point! I'm new to the IT world with no prior experience. I recently became A+ certified. The college I attended had some pretty decent VM labs; using OpenWrt, Wireshark, Osticket and using AD to set passwords and GPO's. I was going to create my own VM home labs and link them to my resume. Do you think that i should mention my school lab experiences on my resume? Also, do you have other videos on creating some VM labs? Again, cool video and you got yourself another subscriber here. Best to you!

If you can't work well with people, you'll only get so far in the world. Patience, kindness, and communication are very important IT skills. I think helpdesk can help teach some of these skills.

It depends on which field you are in tech. Now Cybersecurity and Networking yes. But software developers do not need help desk to get their start in IT. Data Analyst do not need help desk to get started in IT. Cloud computing space does not use phone support like help desk (although they use a ticketing system to perform their job duties). So it really depends on the industry in tech!

It's like wanting to be a pro basketball player. You learn to dribble stationary, then learn to pick your head up, then begin to walk, then jog, and run. Then add crossovers and around the back. Fundamentals first!

Probably my biggest issue with IT is how it starts out as customer service... im really not the social type

Hi Kev, another excellent video. I have a question regarding this video. I heard you say that you are a tech trainer and have trained people before. How would I go about getting trained by you? Do you have an in person/online training program for distance learners? Is there an interview process to qualify for entering your training program? Is there a website that I can refer to that answers these or other commonly asked questions? I'm located in the Washington, DC area if that matters. Thank you for taking the time to make this video and please keep up the good work.

hello KevTech. do you think a field service technician is better to start than helpdesk because you don't have to talk to people and do the ticketing system?
