Joni and her husband were in Paris with producer David Geffen and his wife having fun when he said these words she turned into a song. What a talent!

"The way I see it, " he said "You just can't win it..." I've loved those first lines from the very first time I heard them.

Ah, Joni. She's so much more than just a singer; she's a fully-realized musician and composer who's at home in every musical genre, who recognizes no boundary between genres. It may be a surprising comparison, but Nina Simone was a similar musical spirit, a genius who was became famous for her distinctive voice, but whose compositional and improvisational skills were far above most other popular musicians'. I believe both these women will be recognized as geniuses in the decades and even centuries to come. (Oh, and great reaction Chod; thank you!)

I have a minor quibble, Joni is one of the most important/versatile artists...not just female artists! And do check out her paintings, great work.

"For Free Joni Mitchell 1970". Joni and a piano. A perfect song IMHO

I can’t think of a more versatile female singer than Joni. She is always creating, no rehashing of anything. She sculpts with her voice. If it isn’t artful it isn’t Joni.

Did anyone bring you the work of a singer/songwriter that rivals Joni's catalogue and history?

I absolutely adore Joni....and I'm primarily a rocker! This is one of my favorite songs period! What an amazing artist! Help Me can make a grown man cry!

I agree completely. Not only her versatility, but the fact that she wrote all those songs herself…She is in a category all her own. First album by her I bought was Ladies of the Canyon, when it came out in 1970. More than 50 years later, I can still say I will never get enough Joni Mitchell! Every track on Court and Spark deserves a listen (if you do that, you need to run the last two tracks together - one flows right into the other.) Blue and Hejira are also magnificent albums from end to end. Never anything but beauty and greatness from this woman.

Joni painted the cover art on her early albums as well.

Chod check out her "The Hissing of Summer Lawns" LP as she further expands into a jazz flavor....

You’re not wrong. Joni was a major influence on Prince, to name just one major artist.

Nice. If you're diving into Joni, check out 1975's _Hissing Of Summer Lawns._ Kate Bush & Prince's favorite Joni album, her best, & the album people sleep on:

- Edith & The Kingpin
- In France They Kiss on Main Street
- Don't Interrupt The Sorrow
- Hissing Of Summer Lawns

The lyrics to this song are almost a verbatim retelling of a conversation she had with David Geffen about the music industry and also about cruising for gay sex in Paris, "Thinking how I'll feel when I find, that very good friend of mine." She goes there. Joni goes everywhere.

there is a 70's video of Joni doing her song "California" live and she plays the dulcimer to accompany herself ..think you'd enjoy it!

The band on this album is the fantastic Tom Scott & The LA Express! They have a lot of great fusion jazz under their own name as well. Joni is at her best with the jazz material, IMO and she was always able to play/collaborate with the best (stokin' the star maker machinery behind the popular song!)
