How To Dress a Kimono | Racked

Kimono dressing is a two person job. Most modern Japanese women rely on the help of licensed kimono dressers to keep their folds in check. Professional kimono dresser Masae Satouchi is walking us through each step of how the traditional garment is arranged.

Great video but why did the dressing process stop at the last datejime? That is a stabilizer that goes under a full obi, with an obiage and an obijime to finish it off. Wearing just a datejime on top of a furisode kimono would be like wearing your bra on the outside of a formal gown.

Hmmm I think this video could have been done a little better with more research and thought. Why not show the obi being put on? Why show this stage performance style outfit as a representation of kimono, when most people who wear kimono will never wear an outfit like this? There are other things that I could be picky about, but others have already brought them up. My main concern is mostly the lack of obi and the mismatch between the name of the video/description with the actual content itself.

Showing a fancy outfit for dance or stage performance is fine, but maybe describe it that way? That way people don't get the wrong idea about what kimono is. Also, please don't say that "you need a licensed kimono dresser" to wear kimono. That will discourage people from ever trying if they live outside Japan. But anyone can learn how to dress themselves in kimono! And we should be encouraging that!

This video is really confusing. There are a lot of things not explained, and left out, like obi, obij-jime and obi-age, and it seems she is wearing an uchikake (outer layer wedding kimono) as a normal kimono. And why is she wearing oshiroi for no reason? Not to be rude but this is reeeeally off from what an actual kimono sensei would teach.

is this‽‽ NO NO NO!!
YOU ARENT DONE WITH THE DATEJIME!
YOU ARE MISSING THE OBI AND ALL THE OBI PARTS LIKE THE MAKURA, OBIAGE, OBIJIMO...

I hope there is another video about the obi... Cause that is so uncomplete. Also furisode are typically for unmarried women.

Kimono was introduced to Japenise by Korean monk as funeral clothing in plain tan material color which Japenise copied it to make it into their own clothing with coloring because they had none.
