Michael Rosenbaum brought a level of depth to the character that separated Lex from the simplistic template of "Evil Industrialist". Lex wasn't evil solely on the basis of possessing wealth and ambition. They merely facilitated his descent.

This has been my feelings for years!!! Lex was probably one of the main reasons I kept watching Smallville. And watching the relationship between Lex and Clark over the course of the series was probably another. I loved watching Lex start off as this guy that seemed so good and slowly watch how he becomes the bad guy everyone knows from Superman. And Michael portrayed that damn near perfectly. It makes it hurt more in the feels too watching Lex descend into evil knowing he was good once, that he wasn’t always evil.

This was aesthetically the best looking Lex for the role IMO. Everybody else with their bald heads looked like they were forcing it and Jon Cryer looks the worst as Lex in my opinion. Jesse Eisenberg with his wild hair and twitchy-ness was a god awful Lex and better fit as a "Joker". Michael Rosenbaum just naturally looks like the best Lex.

There's no doubt some of the other actors are amazing, but the creators of the show hit it creating a strategic, intelligent, machiavellian Lex, instead of the traditional mad scientist kind of Lex, and Michael played it perfectly.
