Playing The Same Song 9 Years Later

0:00 - Introduction
Have you ever looked back at old videos of you drumming and thought, "Wow, I've come so far?"

Jared Falk (Drumeo's fearless leader, in case you didn't know) has been putting content online for 17 years. That's longer than some YouTube drummers have been alive!

01:37 - Reacting to 9yr old video
While his first video went up in 2006, it wasn't until 2012 that Jared created an educational video series called "Successful Drumming". It included a bunch of play-alongs, and one was called "Challenge Accepted". It was meant to challenge Jared's skills, and he spent a long time making sure he could play it well (since he had an expensive hourly studio rental and film crew that was draining his wallet every time he did a take).

9 years later, Jared wanted to look back at that play-along video and share some context around his playing at the time - and then recreate it in the current Drumeo studio.

06:53 - Performance
In over a decade of progress, he's learned to make more musically disciplined choices. Back in 2012, he felt like he had something to prove. But Jared has since realized that it isn't about flashy fills and being technical. It's about playing the drums so they match the music.

Which of the two videos do you like better? Has Jared improved? Drop a comment and let us know!

I admire how open and vulnerable Jared is, he is not afraid to put himself out there for criticism. It takes a special kind of special to be that transparent. He comes across as an honest and sincere person.

I love the outstanding work that the channel does.

How Jared's not even more recognised as a player as he is currently is beyond me. Guy's a marvel of a drummer and a hell of a teacher.

It's so weird to remember being in 6th-grade finding those videos jared posted on his youtube, and seeing them now.

Your sound is more mature now and so is your chops. I guess it makes sense since much more time has passed. Right now your sound consists in leting your chops breathe. When you was younger the part sounded much more technical. I think the two playthroughs are amazing. Just two different approaches from two different moments in time. You are an awesome player Jared. Thank you for your incredible work.

Past Jared would've annoyed the soloists, the vocals, and other supports but definitely had fun with the bassist.

Current Jared would've had fun with the entire band.

Excellent playing both then and now, Jared! Thankful for all you have accomplished in the drum world! I know I don't speak for myself when I say you have helped countless drummers become better musicians and for that we are truly GRATEFUL!! 💪💪

My teacher gave me that lesson so many years ago, that my drumming should be "easy" for people to follow and dance to. I prefer the newschool version.

I thought he was crazy good on that old video, but the new one just blew me away. Definitely more relaxed; flowing like water over the drum set. Beautiful.

I guess that's why I'm an ear drummer because of the fact that because I'm not listening from the perspective of a songwriter I am not hearing any problems. It sounded fantastic and on beat. I literally do not hear any off notes.

Definitely the second take .. so much more texture, like you built up anticipation and story like. Letting it breathe. You sounded more relaxed too. Awesome man👏

Thoroughly prefer the new one.

Much more cohesive, more attractive and cleaner sound imo.
Though both are way better than me, something to aspire to!

Jared well done! I am 62 years old and with Covid I just started to do drum cover videos! It is fun but I now see that so much can go into doing good drum videos. But I have to start to play on drumless tracks ! You inspire me thank you! I love Drumeo keep it up....You are doing great great work ! Thank you!!

What I love about the newer version is that your playing sounds much more matured. I thought it would be impossible to improve from the original but you proved me wrong. Great video!!

Nice before/after. After was more relaxed, feeling the groove, and thus the timing was better, and flowed more with music. Great job!
