Im a bladesmith and studied the katana as part of my journey; the best ways to see if a katana is worth its salt is pretty easy to spot:
A good sword has some beef on the width, about 1/4" thick, has a bevel (its not sharp) on the spine (some historical exceptions may exist), and no microbevel on the edge. A legit hamon should be there: it'll be a cloudy line, not a dramatic change in color thats seen across the room.
The handle is where it really shows: fit and finish of the metal fittings (gaurd, top collar, back cap and menuki) are what what give it away; the tighter the fit in the guard and seppa (spacers) and (generally) more ornate the fittings, the better the quality.
Every sword is held in by one or two wooden pins.
If theres anything missing in the koshirae (fittings), thats not a good sign.
The end knot of the wrap and the tightness of the wrap also show quality: you want a rock, not something that shifts around with your thumb.

And if the sword doesn't come with identification papers (who made it and when, and specs)... theres no pride in the work.

This isnt going into what to look for when you take it apart.
