WHO I AM

Hello, I'm Jen Campbell. I'm an award-winning poet and bestselling author of twelve books, spanning short stories, poetry, picture books, and nonfiction.

My books for adults include Please Do Not Touch This Exhibit, The Beginning of the World in the Middle of the Night, The Girl Aquarium, The Bookshop Book, and The Sunday Times bestselling Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops series. My picture book trilogy Franklin and Luna, and my middle-grade book The Sister Who Ate Her Brothers, are published by Thames & Hudson. I've won both an Eric Gregory Award and the Jane Martin Poetry Prize, and my books have been translated into twenty languages.

I've worked in the publishing industry for over fifteen years, initially as a bookseller, and now as a freelance editor, content creator and disability advocate. I review books online, in print and on the radio. I run a Youtube channel where I talk about books, the history of fairy tales, and the representation of disability and disfigurement. I also offer online writing workshops and editorial services, give talks at schools, publishing companies, universities and book festivals on a variety of topics, and I run a book club for TOAST clothing.

Honestly, I hadn’t heard of any of these! A bunch of my most anticipated releases this year turned out to be duds, so here’s hoping fall and winter books are better.

Hey, just wanted to flag that the Sarah Moss book is very much about her life-long struggle with anorexia, in case there are any other people with past history of eating disorders who are not in the right frame of mind to read about that topic!

Really excited for Stag Dance by Torrey Peters in March, and I've already ordered The Sapling Cage, which will be my first Margaret Killjoy! :) Also, I'm *obsessed* with the idea behind the Gliff/Glyff books by Ali Smith!

Read My Good Bright Wolf all in one sitting just yesterday. Have been on a Sarah Moss kick recently after reading Ghost Wall a couple of weeks ago and being blown away. I'm also excited for Gunk by Saba Sams!

Oooh I had no idea Ali Smith was coming out with new books, and a two-piece at that! It sounds wonderful. Also many other very intriguing books I'd not heard of, thank you for the lovely video!

I’ve got the Wyld, the Phillips, the Moss, the Ogawa, and the Pineiro here waiting to be read. I am about halfway through The Echoes but haven’t picked it up for quite some time. I was finding the time spent in Australia to be very dull. I will go back and finish it at some point. I was surprised how much longer the new Pineiro book is too. And the font is not the most comfortable for tired eyes. But I am looking forward to reading it. Hum is probably the next one in this group that I’ll get to. Just picked up Rumaan Alam’s new one yesterday. Not sure if it will be anything like Leave the World Behind (which I loved), but I’m going to give it a go! I will take a look at the new Max Porter.

Hi Jen, I have a request, can you make a playlist with all the videos? It will make watching much easier, because YouTube has removed the "play all" button. Greetings from Poland ⭐💜.

Haven't missed this instance of disability solidarity and support with the mention of Raymond Antrobus's "Signs, Music" ☑ 🙏☺

The book I am most looking forward to next year is the new Torrey Peters.
And second to that is the new book by Omar El Akkad. I loved What Strange Paradise, so am looking forward to a new book by him. But there is still one backlist book of his I haven't read.

Always here for an Ali Smith - I’ve read everything I think, so having or reread until a new one arrives! My favourite Evie Wyld so far is After the Fire but I haven’t got to the new one yet. And great to have a new Claudia Pineiro - Elena Knows was my favourite book that year too, such an interesting discussion of female body autonomy from the perspective of someone who has virtually lost all autonomy through her health.

I just finished Time of the Flies today and it's a stand alone novel. Loved it! But not as much as Elena Knows.

Honestly Jen, you're costing me a lot of money 😅 If you mention a book, it will go straight on my wishlist. I'm so glad to see you back on youtube and love the little squeals on the background ❤

The Max Porter/Cillian Murphy film sounds amazing, and with LIVE music by Jon Hopkins?! Will be having serious FOMO about this, but thank you for making me aware!
