Exploring the Divided City of Mitrovica, Kosovo

Mitrovica, a city in Kosovo, has long been a focal point of ethnic tension between Albanians and Serbians. The roots of the conflict trace back to the dissolution of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, leading to the Kosovo War in 1999. The city is divided by the Ibar River, with the northern part predominantly inhabited by Serbs and the southern part by mostly Albanians. The struggle for control and the desire for independence by the Albanian majority clashed with the Serb minority's resistance, leading to a de facto division of the city. The situation remains tense, marked by sporadic incidents, political disagreements, and ongoing efforts to find a sustainable solution that addresses the concerns of both communities. The divided nature of Mitrovica serves as a microcosm of the broader challenges faced in achieving lasting peace and reconciliation in the region.

In this video, come with me as we stroll through the streets of both the northern and southern sides of the Ibar River.

Muy interesante, sobre todo para aquellos que estamos en otro Continente y que no logramos tener clara la identidad de los Serbios. Gracias por la informacion de primera mano.

nice video, I suggest you go to Mitrovica again, things are better and calmer, it's perfect from both sides and you feel safe in the northern part of the city, which I didn't feel before, a lot has changed in these 8 months, the same moment, Serbian institutions have been closed, the Belgrade-controlled mafia in the north has been eradicated, the city is now safe for tourists and Albanians.

I fell in love with a Kosovar woman during early 2000s. Kosovo was not independent then.... She passed away in 2007 but even after 24 years I remain attached to that part of globe. Perhaps till the very end of my life.

Most of the construction on the Serbian side is very old, because it was virtually untouched during the genocide; most of the construction on the Albanian side is relatively new, because it was destroyed during the genocide.
