Показать описание

Free will seems obvious, simple, common; but it’s subtle, profound, maddening. Free will probes the deep nature of human existence. But big questions have big problems. How to make progress? Can bringing together scientists, philosophers and theologians help? That’s what the ‘Big Questions in Free Will’ project is doing.

Joshua Knobe is an experimental philosopher, whose work ranges across issues in philosophy of mind and action and ethics.

Closer To Truth, hosted by Robert Lawrence Kuhn and directed by Peter Getzels, presents the world’s greatest thinkers exploring humanity’s deepest questions. Discover fundamental issues of existence. Engage new and diverse ways of thinking. Appreciate intense debates. Share your own opinions. Seek your own answers.

Every time Robert asked a question, the guest speaker got so excited at the depth of Robert kuhn's understanding. This makes 'closer to truth' one of the unique channel.

There is a whole serie of videos with Kuhn's
obsession of 'free will'.
Will is Eternal, it is Life-Power,
Gravity is Stuff-Power.
Life goes in Developing-Circuits,
in beginning of a new Developing-Circuit,
Will is at its minimum performance,
and in the end, at its maximum performance.

I can imagine souls riding the rails of reality where the block universe is our amusement park.

I grew up around a man I only really knew through stories. whoever I was communicating with wasn't him. By the time I was born my grandfather couldn't remember who my mother was or who he was. Just a human being I called grandpa that was eating, sleeping, laughing, etc. But didn't know who the people around him were, I still wonder if he felt lonely. Unfortunate.

Freewill?...No such thing. If it does exist, its like our minds, just the brain jerking itself around, until the end.

I'm starting to think that the quandary of understanding is tied to the multivocal Nature of individual, human existence. Not just subjective, consciousness, but consciousness of the supernatural.
If existence is multivocal and can be shifted from one "filter" to another, then the notion of understanding must incorporate this fact. How does it do that? How do you translate one filter to another? It is not the same as translating different languages.
From the Kantian point of view, the categories and judgements of one filter can give an understanding of the world. An understanding whose different languages can be corresponded to one another, because their references are framed through the same filter. But how do you translate different filters? From one set of categories and judgements to another set of categories and judgements?
How do you translate the narrative that has the categories of spacetime, to a narrative that has no such categories?
This translational inability: obtuseness, must be the source of the Nature of the quantum world of science and the spiritual world of Religion. Is it also the quandary at the heart of the question of "free will"? I think so.

Some people simply can't acknowledge that their achievements are not solely theirs, or that people who are down on their luck aren't just stupid and lazy. Acknowledging that there is no free will is acknowledging that we're all a part of this cosmic fabric. All interlinked and dependent upon one another.

What makes people think human action is different is only bad epistemology.

human mind perceives free will in and beyond nature?

Free will, emotions and morality : the 3 most striking features of the human condition while we're alive. I recently read that Richard Feynman replied to this question: 'what was he most proud of in his personal life?' he immediately said: 'to have loved my first wife as I did'. As a scientist even he got 'sucked in' by the profundity of his emotions and felt their consequent morality. This awareness does look like a highen between the material world and the spiritual world. Free will may exist, therefore, between these two worlds, in ourselves; the human spieces. Guilt may work as a lytmus test. .

Higher-level conscious beings, like dogs and cats, have free will as well. It's not an emergent property exclusive to humans.

Free will is a precious gift from God. By giving us free will, he dignifies us so that we have the power to make our own decisions. To a great extent, we can determine our future. The Bible encourages us to choose life by listening to God’s voice, that is, by choosing to obey his commands. (Deuteronomy 30:19, 20) This offer would be meaningless, even cruel, if we lacked free will. Instead of forcing us to do what he says, God warmly appeals to us: “O if only you would actually pay attention to my commandments! Then your peace would become just like a river”. (Isaiah 48:18)

It's always hard to believe that really smart people believe that the universe is deterministic. You can easily demonstrate that we live in a universe that features reliable causation. How in the world would you show that the universe can only unfold in one specific way. This is metaphysics, and borderline mystical beliefs. The parts do not control the whole and the past does not control the present. Active living things can use reliable causation to change the present and the future, otherwise we couldn't even maintain life.

God decided to create man on earth.
He could have chosen otherwise.

Invite Laplace's demon over to dinner, ask him what you'll do in the next five seconds. After he tells you what you'll do, you just do something else to spite him. Perfect knowledge of determinism leads to indeterminate results.
