I co-wrote this song with him when we were both in the Brinsley Schwarz group back in the early 70's!

That little false key change in the middle is so unique! Fantastic songwriting

Trademark of a great song is that if it came out today, it would be a hit, no doubt!

A pessimist would say this song ended the 70's, an optimist would say this song started the 80's. This got me and others going.

This song sounded nostalgic back in 1979.... It sounds ultra nostalgic in 2023. I loved this song then and I love it more now!

Some random show had this playing on tv, some pig guy was singing and dancing with a group of other people, while some dude was walking around with a shotgun.

Heard this is in The handmaid's tale and it's crazy how some songs are so timeless! 🎶

Lyrics:

Oh, I can’t take another heartache
Though you say you’re my friend
I’m at my wits’ end
You say your love is bona fide
But that don’t coincide
With the things that you do
And when I ask you to be nice, you say

You’ve gotta be cruel to be kind in the right measure
Cruel to be kind, it’s a very good sign
Cruel to be kind means that I love you, baby
(You’ve gotta be cruel)
You’ve gotta be cruel to be kind

Well, I do my best to understand, dear
But you still mystify
And I want to know why
I pick myself up off the ground
To have you knock me back down
Again and again
And when I ask you to explain, you say

You’ve gotta be cruel to be kind in the right measure
Cruel to be kind, it’s a very good sign
Cruel to be kind means that I love you, baby
(You’ve gotta be cruel)
You’ve gotta be cruel to be kind

(Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh)

Well, I do my best to understand, dear
But you still mystify
And I want to know why
I pick myself up off the ground
To have you knock me back down
Again and again
And when I ask you to explain, you say

You’ve gotta be cruel to be kind in the right measure
Cruel to be kind, it’s a very good sign
Cruel to be kind means that I love you, baby
(You’ve gotta be cruel)
You’ve gotta be cruel to be kind

(Cruel to be kind) Oh, in the right measure
(Cruel to be kind) Yeah, it’s a very, very, very good sign
(Cruel to be kind) It means that I love you, baby
(You’ve gotta be cruel) You’ve gotta be cruel to be kind

(Cruel to be kind) Oh, in the right measure
(Cruel to be kind) Yeah, it’s a very, very, very good sign
(Cruel to be kind) It means that I love you, baby
(You’ve gotta be cruel) You’ve gotta be cruel to be kind

(Cruel to be kind) Oh, in the right measure
(Cruel to be kind) Yeah, it’s a very, very, very good sign……

I JUST realized that there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING stopping me from retiring THIS VERY SECOND...and I'm not even 60 yet. Suddenly this song flooded into my head.... no idea why... but wow I am just taken aback at this moment in my life. i remember being 4 years old and demanding to know what I had to do to be able to retire right then and there.... Life is cruel... now it's time for it to be kind! I go into work on Tuesday, coming back from vacation...I wonder how they would react if I threw out a 2 week notice!?!? (required by contract, I can't even die unless I put in a 2 week notice first...)

Timeless song at 12 and 53. I honestly think it’s the best song ever recorded.

Heard this song on the radio today. Is it weird to feel nostalgic for a time you never even experienced.

This is one of those songs I've heard in the background so many times but has recently registered as a "jam". Thanks Sirius XM 70s on 7
