Abilify

Abilify, an anti-psychotic medication that treats schizophrenia and mania associated with bipolar disorder, is over prescribed. Now off-patent the generic version aripiprazole finds increasing but somewhat controversial use among individuals with depression, autism, irritability, sleep disorders, tics and anxiety. Among nursing home residents, especially those suffering from dementia, far too many people receive anti-psychotic drugs.

Serious side effects may occur including the relatively recently discovered pathological desire to gamble, binge eat, engage in buying sprees and enter into excessive, unwise sexual relationships. Weight gain, sugar intolerance, outright diabetes, mental impairment and seizures may occur. Movement disorders, restlessness and the jerky facial twitches known as tardive dyskinesia are additional adverse events.

Few realize the tremendous costs associated with this drug. Although Abilify is available as a generic drug, the cash price at different drug stores ranges between $730-$960 a month or up to $32 for one day of treatment. Coupon cards and other discounts shield the patient from out of pocket expenditure, however the insurance companies still must pay outrageous sums for these pills. In the end, this scenario leads to continuously escalating health care premiums.

I watched a YouTube video of a young man who got Abilify by injection 400 mg. In a few months he got akathisia and unalived himself. Be careful and stay safe.🙏

I gained almost 35 pounds in two months ... I was started on 400mg injectable - they said they put me on it because it has the least side effects? They have weaned me down to 150 mg injectable and dispose of the other 150 - it only comes in 300 and 400 - was never warned about the compulsive shopping, sex, gambling and eating. The most weight I have gained in the shortest amount of time in my life - I can not fit in my clothes and do not want to leave the house - given the choice if I never would have agreed to allowing this to be injected into my body! I probably have now gained over 40 pounds in just over four months and still gaining - I know stop eating right? I wish it was that easy! I told them about the weight gain and they initially did I had to argue to get them to see there are no benefits so far - so why the risk? I know the likely answer and they will never admit this - I am on a CTO - AKA - Forced drugging! In my experience forced drugging is somewhat equivalent to sexual assault! You have no choice and your "no" please stop you are hurting me - means nothing. Torture comes to mind and the torture chamber is my own body!

I've been on abilify for years now, have gained a lot of weight, crave carbs etc. I was originally put on it as an adjunct to an antidepressant & had tried a number of different antidepressants over the years. A few years ago I was so frustrated by the weight gain I went off it all at once on my own & became suicidal within a couple of weeks. I tried to ride it out for an additional month but finally went to the local "psych" ED & was admitted to the in-pt mental health unit for a week. Went back on it & slowly the depression lessened. A couple of years ago my psych Dr knew I was still frustrated by carb cravings & weight gain & we decided to try Latuda instead but even after a year of taking that my depression became worse again. I hate taking anti-psychotics. There are a lot of side effects & I hate being so dependent on this med. I really don't know what else to do but keep taking it. I have insurance that covers it but feel guilty because I know it's extremely expensive although the Latuda was 3 times as much.

How worrying it is, then that the Healthcare Commission should report last year that almost 40% of people with psychosis are on levels of antipsychotics exceeding recommended limits. Such levels cause heart attacks. Indeed, the National Patient Safety Agency claims heart failure from antipsychotics is a likely cause for some of the 40 average annual "unexplained" deaths of patients on British mental health wards.

SO I was put on this a couple weeks ago. I bloated up, retained massive amounts of water, nearly unable to walk and hard to breathe. :(

I've used 10mg for about a year now for my autism, mood swings and psychosis. It has kept me very stable

I’ve been on Abilify 10mg for Schizophrenia for about 8 weeks. Three days ago I suddenly stopped eating and lost 15 pounds in two days. The weight loss was just as unnatural and unhealthy as the weight gain I had from a couple weeks of Mirtazapine (30 pounds) and a couple months of Invega injections (20 pounds). The Mirtazapine gave me psychosis and the Invega made me feel like a zombie. Abilify helps me think clearly but 10 mg is too much for me I’ve been cutting my pills in half. The symptoms don’t seem to go away... I’m going to start monitoring my daily intake of vitamins and minerals. Schizophrenia patients seem to be deficient in certain vitamins and minerals. Taking the daily recommendation of vitamins and minerals should decrease my schizophrenic symptoms so I can safely lower my dosage. I’ll probably stay at 2mg for the rest of my life unless my vitamin and mineral treatment works!

I am on the Autistic spectrum and have been depressed and angry for years, been on setraline, then off that and onto prozac.. im now on 20mg of that and slowly comming of it..
im gunna see how i am off meds completely for awhile..
but my psychiatrist did suggest i could go on a small dose of Abilify, as studies show its very effective with the chronic anger, agitation and anxiety which can dominated an autistic persons life.
So I want to give it a shot atleast. Everyday is hell.

Everyone is different on every drug. I know a guy who is on anti psychotics and it’s changed his life for the better. Yes, he gained some weight, but works out, does cardio and he is fine.

The more you read into side effects, the more you will get them!

Stay strong people!

Very well said. I also think a lot of us as patients think we know more than the doctor and push some of the drugs. Ability had many commercials in the late 2000s and that in turn caused many patients to ask their doctors for the medicine.
Overall, I personally didn’t know it could cause insomnia or drowsiness.
I’m on Seroquel and I don’t have many side effects. It’s a good drug for me.
Can you make a video about it and OCD?
Thanks!
