CORRECTION!!!! Dense water does NOT rise to form ice!!!! Water is densest at 4 degrees Celcius and that cold dense water sinks to the bottom of the lake. The fish will hibernate in this layer of dense water and stay alive for the winter. As water freezes at zero degrees, the molecules form ice crystals that are less dense than the cold water and floats at the top of the lake, forming an insulation layer at the top that further prevents the rest of the lake from reaching zero degree and freezing solid.
