What an amazing podcast I love John and his life experiences. I’ve read a few of his books and you did a great job conversing with him

"Which was true." Had to get that one in there? No ambiguity

His actual interview was just someone telling him to give this story whenever you are asked about the CIA 😂😂😂

Great interview and, as others have said, it’s refreshing to not have constant interjections from the interviewer trying to steer the conversation one way or the other.

John is an awesome guest. He's someone I'd love to sit down with a talk to.

As someone whos taken a polygraph 3 different times for 3 different agencies (passed all 3), this is a spot on representation of what its like. That's how I know this dude is not BSing.. Great interiew.

I stumbled upon your interview on CIA interviews and listened to the entire interview. Fascinating. When I was out of high school I attended a community college and received a degree in electronics technology (later I went to a university for a BSEE), and we had a number of employers come to speak to our class of about 25 students. The most memorable was the CIA looking to hire techs. I didn’t interview with them, but it was a fascinating hour….

There has NEVER been a better example of an interviewer doing/saying less and being so capable.

Not just the CIA. Other agencies use similar procedures.
Interviewer: "You're reacting the question about smoking pot."
Me: "If my mom ever finds out that I smoked pot she's going to kill me."
Interviewer: "Were you raised Catholic by any chance?"
Me: "Yeah, how did you know?"
Interviewer: *laughs* "I've done a lot of these."

It's interesting that he's allowed to talk about the interview process, most intelligence agencies have pretty strict NDA documentation on their entire selection processes.

The “speck” test is checking your amygdala response. It’s different from a normal polygraph test because they’re testing your emotional response more than the veracity of the statement. It’s tied to eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy. They want to see if you not only have any trauma and baggage, but how your body deals with it under pressure of unearthing it.

I love that he felt the need to add the "which was true" after saying he never had sex with a man.
