I do have a whole house fan installed in my current ranch home (2240 sqft). It is in the middle of the home in a hallway, right above the thermostat. It is a Dayton 36” old style fan, not like yours and it has a 2 speed motor. I have the controls wired inside a hallway closet next to it. Controls are on/off, switch to change speeds, and an adjustable timer up to 15 minutes. The air flow is amazing, I have to open the back sliding door, the front door and most of the bedroom windows. It will cool down the home in 15 minutes. The noise it makes is not overwhelming. It was installed into the rafters quite firmly, when the home was built in 2003. In slow speed it can run all night or can be set with the timer for 15 minutes, by that time you’re normally asleep. It works quite well, especially in the spring and fall. This is a do able DYI installation for a good experienced homeowner, not your average homeowner. I live in a Chicago suburb.

I lived in a home with a huge attic fan, blades around 5foot diameter. These type of fans do work.

I like the idea that it cools the attic too, but for $1000, I'll stick with putting a box fan in a window pushing out, and another box fan on the opposite side of the house pushing in. Far less air flow than an attic fan but only 40 bucks.

How do you turn the damn thing off. I have a customer that just moved into a new house with one of these and no instructions for it. The controller has no off switch. This damn thing is causing the water heater to backdraft and it popped the $100 protection device maybe this is a bad installation or something but a controller with no off switch is stupid,

There should be a vent for the whole house fan. Leaving the windows open overnight could be a concern.

What if the house is in the middle of a row of houses and does not have vents besides the bathroom exhaust vents?

people said that whole house fan creates pressure in the attic and is not good. Is that true?

Another question is why install the fan in the attic? why not just install it on a wall so that it directly sucks stale air out of the house?

My opinion this styles not good at all and the reason why because the fan suck the air from inside home with all humidity from cooking, shower and air conditioner process push air to the attic may cause mold and moisture accumulate .
