Disneyland Has Some Radioactive Spots

Disneyland is a place that I have been going to since I was little. Was interesting to walk around with a radiation detector and map out the differences in radiation in the area. I found it a bit surprising that one area showed a small increase in radiation outside of normal levels.

I have friends who work here. Used to work here myself. I'm sure some of the folks I know here would find this interesting. Thanks Drew!

Huh, I was just thinking yesterday “I wonder if Disney security would even care about a Geiger counter, ” then I see this video today. Wonderful timing!

Part of Walt Disney's dream was to build a small city for people to live there including cast members, but that was for Disney world as it was more land to work with. Which also had brought permits to develop a nuclear-power plant, for the theme park and living areas. But like Drew said, he passed before his next dream could be a reality. When I visit the world show case. I see my grand parents past to my current day (Carousel of progress) as was the future in the 70's and 80's. Growing up realizing what that show case was and is today, still makes me smile that humanity might make it beyond the stars. We really owe a lot to the engineers and innovators/ imagineers as Disney calls them.

In my town, the "kids fishing pond" was made from settling ponds and tailings piles from a long gone mill located next to the creek that ran through town. It took until the 1970's before it was discovered the whole site was radioactive because it was a radium mill. People with sensitive detectors are helpful.

You mentioned the length of your Videos and hoping that someone might find them interesting I think you underestimate just how good your filmmaking is and how interesting your subject matter and your research is. I could happily watch a two hour video just due to the excellent production that goes behind itas well as a can interest of course and all things radioactive. Please keep bringing forward such brilliant quality.

I think you've convinced me to get a radiacode lol. That mapping feature is way too cool.

Perhaps Toontown shows the highest reading is because it's the closest to where the fireworks have been set off, currently, and for decades. There are some theses published online pointing to some radioactive aerosols (and perhaps particulates) from use of fireworks.

Oh man! I can't find my copy of Our Friend the Atom. Now I have to get another one.

It probably wouldn't have been smart for Walt Disney to put a reactor at Disneyland back in the 50's. However, if one of the Disney family were in charge now, with the advent of micro reactors...or an educational reactor like they have at universities. Now that would be cool.

When I was at Disneyland in the early 1990s, we took apart a broken EXIT sign and it had tubes of tritium in it to illuminate the sign when the power went out.

I always love finding radioactive items and places. My favourite place is an air museum near me that has a ton of radium dials. I found one there with 300k CPM, and even some aerial cameras with thorium lenses. Most dials were around 20k CPM. In terms of radioactive antiques, while depressionware and radium items are fairly common, I’ve never come across any fiestaware items. The only one I have I had to buy from United Nuclear.

Very interesting indeed. I surmise the anomalies in Toon Town and in the entire California Adventure are from building materials. Maybe the aggregate was quarried from an old military radium dump. There were many in the Southern California area during and after WWII.
