The date of January 24, 1848 started out as a typical work day for carpenter James W. Marshall, who was tasked with constructing a water-powered sawmill in Coloma, California. While digging a channel, Marshall looked down and noticed shiny metallic flakes in the water below him. What Marshall discovered would trigger one of the largest single movements of human beings in world history. Once President James K. Polk confirmed the presence of gold in California, thousands of people from the United States and abroad caught “gold fever,” and flocked to California with hopes and dreams of striking it rich. The California Gold Rush transformed the United States forever, and fast tracked California to becoming a state in 1850. My grandfather's grandfather (Charles Wood) emigrated from Concord Massachusetts to California in 1852, via the Nicargua route. My grandfather knew this story well - and even visited Nicaragua to better appreciate the experience. After arriving in California, my Great Great Grandfather and his brother worked in the foothills selling goods to miners and served as guides between San Francisco and the Gold Country. He eventually established a farm and ranching operation in Danville, and while no longer in operation, many of the buildings remain on the remaining acreage. Prior to this article, I did not realize that going via Nicaragua meant steam ships were used, I had assumed it was sailing vessels.

Just panning for gold would have made you a multi-millionaire (or just a simple sluice-box setup). What a time!!!
