what I like about SciFi is that it lets you dream. People from all over the world can dream of the "what if", no matter if you're rich or poor.

This video makes an excellent point. It talks about how not only science, but sci-fi as a whole is the reason how society had gotten this far when it came to technological advancements. Science fiction was just a sub-asset of how much science truly has gotten society on it's feet worldwide!

Etienne Augé, thank you for presenting the purpose of Sci-fi. As an aside, I prefer the TEDx presentations more than TED Talks. Cheers

Apart from historical inaccuracies, very helpful talk. As others have mentioned there were other writers, like Mary Shelley, who wrote novels and short stories that are classified as science fiction way before Jules Verne. In any case this is a very good talk, I'll have to watch it again.

Viewing this TEDx presentation, three years later, for a 2nd time. Why? Answer: Turns out, for educational purposes, the presentation by Etienne Augé is grade-A quality. Up to this date, my research indicate Etienne Augé is on the mark. I am excited. Again, many thanks.

It sounds like the dig at the Netherlands was telling them to spend some of their money on science and innovation.

Thanks for this video. "Stories that can inspire people": yes! Trying to do just that with my (free) Assembling Terrania Cycle. We have all kinds of gloom and bad news to deal with--but what kind of world do we want to live in? What would encourage us forward, engage imagination and new solutions?

I was disappointed not to hear mention of Iain M. Banks in a talk on science fiction! But an enjoyable and interesting watch nonetheless :)

Have you read Proxima Centauri b by Mike LeBlanc? We highly recommend it as the next great sci fi novel! Check it out on amazon

The tablet was envisioned long before Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy. Actually the Star Trek TOS has tablets.

That guy is creepy. He used to be an awful internet troll (I don't know if he still is). He harassed me and tried to humiliate me on internet when I was 15 years old - and did the same to my little brother who was only 12 years old at the time. What an interesting and sane hobby for a 40-something university lecturer.

Terrible uninformative cliché-ridden talk. Cheers
