The dire wolf was a formidable canine that roamed the Americas for over 100,000 years. It resembled a larger, sturdier version of the modern gray wolf but despite its name the dire wolf a true wolf but belonged to a separate lineage within the canid family. Measuring at three feet tall and weighing 150 pounds, its muscled form housed bone-crushing jaws built for tackling bison and mammoths. They lived in social packs, potentially cooperating in hunts and raising young. Their reign as apex predators ended around 9,500 years ago during the last ice age when their large megafauna prey died off, it also could not compete with the gray wolf when hunting smaller prey causing it to go extinct 🐺
