Forgive me to say that most of this information is pretty obvious. The part you left out, and the information I need, how do these valves open and close - clockwise or counterclockwise? I only work on my own now, but I forget this every time. I need to mark it on the valve cap.

I work in ammonia and they tell us don't loosen packing valves because it can start leaking ammonia out when you crack valve. Had it happen a bunch of times when packing loose. We just lubricate stem with some refrigerant oil and then cycle it.

Should the valve "not" accessible to the compressor when front seated (you said it "is"). When front seated, the service valve opens to the connecting hose.

Always confused me. Only 3 positions. Just know what's going on in each one to avoid a terrible mistake out of control.

So if I needed to add refrigerant I would need to back seat the valves, correct?

Awesome tip I was never taught to do that. Now I always do when servicing on those valves

My service valve (Carrier) does not have a lock nut. Instead, it has a sunk ring with two slots (wish could upload a picture), which may need a special tool to torque. Anyone know how to do? Thx!

Is it true that ammonia valves should be either fully open or fully closed, otherwise valves are going to leak ??
