How to Take Pictures in the Snow: How to get the Perfect Exposure In "3 Shots Or Less" #07 FroKnowsPhoto

One question that comes in all the time is my "snow" pictures look too dark or gray. The reason is simple, if you follow the cameras meter it will be thrown off by the brightness of the snow thus underexposing your shot.

This is the simple method I use for getting the perfect exposure in the snow.

Ah Jared. Watching you sometimes can be painful because we know that one day you are going to give yourself a heart attack. But I keep watching you because when you get into technical details and reviews you are one of the best out there. This series - Perfect Exposure in 3 shots or less - is one of the best tutorials on the Internet. Keep on jammin'.

I like how you started with using the camera meter to address the people saying that you should just use auto metering. Yes, spot metering will be more accurate than evaluative, but I like to see you setting up the shot manually to get it right. It reminds me of my old math classes, where we had to show our work.

Seeing the histogram of the first shot at 2:12 can help you to get the perfect exposure in the 2nd shot already. Looking at the peek between the midtown and the highlight bar, reveals that the snow should be in the whites, close to clipping. The distance is a bit more than a full stop. My next exposure choice would have been 1/800s.

Fro, would you do a video explaining how you can comfortably squat for that long? :)

Thanks. If my recollection is right, in earlier videos, you shot in manual so that you started out without knowing what the camera's metering system would suggest. Here, you started out with a metered result, presumably because it's well understood that cameras generally underexpose in snow and you wanted to show that the meter isn't always right. And since the meter isn't always right, as photographers we are called upon to THINK about what's going on, and not just assume the camera will always nail it. Useful series.

I watch your videos every now and then. Just had an idea, you should make an video about what makes bad photos and what not to do while taking photos in various scenarios and call it "FroNosPhoto".

I hear that adjusting your exposure compensation would work as well. Is that a possibility, and if so, how would that affect the shutter speed, aperture, or ISO settings?

My D5600 has a 'beach and snow' mode. It's awesome! No fussing about!

Jared, in the case of shooting wildlife (in my case mostly deers), with snow, foggy whitty atmosphere, quite often at 400_600mm range (coupled to a D500), I have to have a high aperture speed. So I'm often at 1/1000 sec or more. What would you be your advice for proper exposure? Using high ISO will create noise. Should I overexpose a bit? Thanks!
