Long Division of Polynomials - A Slightly Harder Example

In this video, you'll learn how to divide a polynomial of degree 4 by a trinomial of degree 2 using the long division process. One unique aspect of this example is that the dividend (the polynomial being divided) is missing a term of degree 3, which is an important detail when performing long division of polynomials. By including this missing term as a placeholder, we ensure that all terms align correctly for the division. Throughout this video, we break down each step of the division to make sure you understand how to handle such situations. A detailed example like this will help you build a solid foundation for more complex polynomial division problems.

What You Will Learn:

How to divide a higher-degree polynomial by a trinomial using long division.
The importance of placeholders for missing terms in polynomial division.
Step-by-step breakdown of aligning terms correctly to ensure a proper division process.
Handling the remainder effectively and writing the final solution.

In a 6 minute video, I learned more than in 90 minutes of math class. This is fabulous.

I remember watching your videos my sophomore year of high school, and you were a much better teacher than my actual teacher. I would cry because I couldn't do my homework and would do badly on tests, so when I found these videos, I was able to do a lot better! I'm now a senior and I'm taking AP Calc AB and every so often I forget how to do long division since we don't use it often, and I just come back to your videos. Thanks for being awesome. I'll probably still watch them in college!

yes, that is the nice thing about video!
and often times, the teacher has to cover so much material per year, or they themselves get in trouble...

It must suck using a dry erase board as a lefty.

@roxycheergurl you will have to change that bookmark soon : ) i have a new website i am working on; i will put all the videos on my new site and take them off my old site!

You've helped me understand this far better in 5 minutes than my instructor could in 15 minutes before moving on to the next section in class. I don't do very well with algebra to begin with, and sometimes things just aren't explained in a way that clicks for me, and it doesn't help if they're rushing. Thank you so much!

@mollymarie2 well, in that case, you would divide 5x^4 by x^2; basically though you are doing the exact same thing

never knew that i would come here to learn this again😂😂
I am 1st year engineering student 😂.

Thank you so so much! I’ve been looking for a video that actually covers dividing with the many term polynomials like I am. This is so helpful I actually understand it now haha. Again thank you so much!

@oxijen22 synthetic division is used when dividing by a linear term

if there is no variable with the indicated power, why would you put a 1 there instead of a zero?

i have my pre-calc test tomorrow and as i was doing my homework i got stuck on this one problem and couldn’t understand why I couldn’t get the right answer. i completely forgot about the place holders. thank you so much, you literally saved my life.

Thank you, taking an online class from my local community college, the homework doesn't show how to divide poly's by tri's, but it's in one of the "exams".
Spent the last hour trying to guess at it and failed.
Your video cleared me up on a few issues, thanks.

@imurmoma you dont have to have them anywhere. it is just to make stuff line up

why does it have to divide 'evenly' ?
u will just end up with fractions, thats all
