the Gothic monastery of Bellapais is located on the slopes of the 5 Fingers mountain range in the Kyrenia region. The beauty of the 13th-century French Gothic Abbey of Bellapais has passed through various historical periods, each of which has left a distinct mark on it. The abbey was originally founded by St. Mary of Hori just after 1200 by Augustinians who fled Jerusalem. The abbey had the right to bear myrtle and golden spurs, which increased the abbey's claims to the archbishopric of Nicosia. In 1240 it benefited from the great wealth left there by a knight known as Rodger Norman, who gifted them with an alleged fragment of the True Cross. When the Genoese occupied the island in 1373, the abbey fell into disgrace. The treasury was smashed and the wealth of the abbey looted, including a piece of the true cross. The monastery fell victim to the onslaught of moral and physical decay. The monks of the order became corrupt and never regained your former reputation. The Ottomans looted the abbey in 1570 and left it in poverty. What happened to the monks and their families is unknown. The village around the monastery was probably founded by the descendants of Munich. The abbey came under the protection of the Orthodox Church and served religious services until 1974. Repairs began gradually only from 1960. The buildings are constantly undergoing a restoration program. What we can see today is a mixture of completed and destroyed parts, with some parts of the monastery still in excellent condition. This place is definitely worth a visit.
