Was anyone else fairly blown away by the Songwriter scene? For a film with a lot of strange sequences, that was probably the most audacious and bold one of them all.

I had another interpretation that I want to share in case somebody else agrees with me. I think the entire movie is the guy´s delirium. He felt like his life had no meaning so he invented all these misteries and adventures. If you think about it, all the things he read on comics happen in real life, the owl´s kiss and the dog killer. And what about the scene where the chick dies in the lake in the exact same position of the playboy photo? The entire film he is surrounded by hot girls him being a porn addict. All the misteries in his videogames magazine and his cereal box I think he invented them, otherwise they are too unbelievable. So, my conclusion is that he had all these fantasies in his subconscious based on all the pop culture products he consume and he invented all these adventures to give more meaning to his boring and empty life.

What was your take on the homelessness aspect of the film? It was certainly a major part of the film. Sam goes on a rant about how much he hates homeless people, and then at the end, he basically becomes homeless, but he seems content and comfortable.

It's not just that they sit on Hitchcock 's grave (and his favorite actress Grace Kelly). The whole movie is an homage to Hitchcock. The way the plot unfolds, bit by bit; the way it's shot (wide angles, close-ups); and especially the constantly oppressive background music. I enjoyed it too

I got the impression Garfield's character was the dog killer.

If we try and decipher this movie, are we trying to do exactly what the movie says is a huge waste of time? Looking for meaning where there is none, wasting time on searching for meaning in something that doesn't have it? That would explain a lot of the scenes and themes without connection or meaning... What better way to get the message across?

I live in Silver Lake. They did such a fantastic job capturing L.A.s East Side in cinema form. Both Los Feliz/Griffith Park, Echo Park and East Hollywood.
It was so great seeing the streets and buildings I know on the wide screen

This was a movie that had me engaged for the first 40 minutes, then lost me for a bit. There were glimpses of greatness, but I just couldn't enjoy it as a full movie.

I saw this movie as representing our modern society through the main character always obsessed with conspiracy theories, meanings, different kinds of philosophies that ultimately lead to nothing and he is left depressed, nihilistic and eventually accepting reality that people create bullshit all around, fabricate all kinds of things because they share the same mindset with him, they all look for meanings when there is none. The only difference between him and them is that they never come to face reality meanwhile he gets hit by it pretty hard.

I don't think people dislike the movie because it's "going after" what they like so much. Rather, the movie has so many dead end side stories that never get resolved. So much of this movie didn't make sense, and it felt like it was just dragging the entire time. The point of the movie seems to be that everything in the movie is essentially pointless, and that would have been fine if they would have somehow mentioned this from the beginning, or in any of the descriptions.

I can appreciate the cinematography, but the storyline didn't go anywhere, and though the score was good, in my opinion, it had to carry the film. There were so many times that nothing was actually happening, and the fact it took so long to say that is probably why it wasn't well received. A lot of wasted time telling parts of the story that were not only uninteresting, but also unnecessary.

I came here hoping I'd find a deeper meaning to the film. Yet, it appears to be everything I thought it was.

Andrew: I wonder if you know how I can get in touch with Jesus?
The guy: You're calling the wrong person.
Andrew: No, I mean Jesus the lead singer.

The songwriter scene reminded me of the architech from The Matrix

This movie suffers from the current Hollywood shuning of self critique or something original. Anything that is not rebooted, over simplified, with a longer duration that challenges the spectator to immerse himself and pay attention and every single movie that is not part of a cinematic universe or franchise is doomed to fail these days, it's sad actually and we deserve pearls and gems like this from once in a while!

Towards the end of the movie, he is dressed like Elliot in E.T.

He was so focused on the missing girl, having sex with women, codes, music, video games, etc. that he neglected his self. We never saw him go to work so it's no wonder that he was evicted from his apartment and had his car repossessed. Much like many people in real life who have effed up priorities.
