The eight-time Grammy-winner sat down with Tom Power to talk about his career and why he wanted to write a suite for four civil rights legends: Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali and Rosa Parks.

I would love to ask Christian McBride what he thinks of Mingus and his music and the connection to James Brown and his music.

When I listen to “Better get it in your soul” I hear the predominant rhythm coming from the trombone, the saxes, and the piano - particularly underlying the solos. And I wonder if Brown was influenced in any way by Mingus. “Every instrument is a drum”
