What's The Difference Between Roland VAD And TD Drums?

Roland has two lines of electronic drums, the TD and VAD lines. In this video I'm covering the basics on why they are different and which ones are worth buying.

Note: the TD-50X can differentiate between shallow and deep rimshots. Roland calls it rimshot nuance

"Look as cool as humanly possible" : exactly, that's why I bought my VAD506. The acoustic feeling really improves the drumming experience, and the acoustic size of the VAD506 allow not to forget how to properly play on a "real" drum kit.

I came across this channel when I began shopping for an electric kit. Ended up getting a TDKVX instead of VAD103. I did some upgrades for my own preferences with triggers and the in depth module tutorial video. The snare and bass from an old pearl rhythm traveler I had were easy to convert. I went from reluctantly buying an electronic kit for practice to buying/building something I love. Thank you, Justin!

I got the TD27 module, then gutted some pdx pads & put the insides into a Ludwig shell set. Best of both worlds, way lower price 😁

Man, your channel is by far the best on edrum content - keep it up!

Wow great review someone who convinced me that TD is still good still VAD’s look better though but more expensive I will stick to TD appreciate the review!

Man, I know I sound crazy, but I'm thinking about getting the VAD 103 over the TD-17KVX just because of the looks.
I have the option of adding an extra tom down the road. Sure, the TD-17 has a better module and more components, but for me, but I'm sold on the VAD 103 looks. I already have the kick pedal, throne and a bunch of drumsticks, I would just need a decent hi-hat stand and I also love the TD-07 module. However, way in the future, I'd just invest on the TD-27 module.

Anyways, nice video as always, my friend!

Nice explanation of Roland's marketing philosophy. I am of the "specs" camp. I have the TD-17 module which came with the base TD-17 kit, no 10 inch snare, but 3 rubber pads. I ditched the rubber pads as they gave me tennis elbow. Roland wanted $750.00 for 3 Pd-8's, mesh heads, so I bought a Donner DED-200 complete kit for $600.00, it came with a better rack, and 3, 8 inch mesh heads, but the module was only good for Vst's. It gave me three more cymbals as well. Looking back I should have spent the Two grand to start with, but I would still have that smaller TD-17 rack, it's just to small, oh and by the way stay away from Roland's 6 inch mesh heads, they are just too small, to play comfortably. they come on their base entry model.

If a drummer sits down behind a TD-17 and rocks it, then he's going to have stage presence regardless of what the kit looks like.

What I *really* would like you to compare in that video that you do "down the line" is the sound output in an apartment setting between the TD line and the VAD line. My apartment doesn't care what I look like and I am way, WAY past the age of needing to impress anyone by 'looks'. But my neighbors below and beside me? Well, they never see me but OH my, how they care about noise. I cannot imagine the fuller shells of the VAD line would be at all pleasing to them. Give it a ponder.

You do great work!

I wish Roland would offer the same amount of kit pieces between their TD & VAD Kit lines. When considering this high-end brand, you should expect at a minimum a 5 pc kit featuring 3 toms, 2 crashes and a ride w the only differences being the modules and pad types (shell or no shell).

Great videos as always brother as this is a great one since I have the 506! Can't wait to watch your extended version of that matchup

My first E kit was a TD30 but if I was buying now....VAD all the way!
I made a 7Pc A2E running a TD50 with the Digital Pack, every input used up and triggers SD3 VSTs and it's amazing. The savings let me buy all the best things I wanted for it too.

Hello, fellow drum nerds! I have the opportunity to upgrade my drums and the options I am interested in within my budget are the Roland TD17-KVX and the Yamaha DTX 8 that just came out. I am torn between these two options. I care more about sound and functionality than aesthetics— but if they perform similarly, I would say I prefer the DTX 8.

Thanks to anyone for their input. With the chip shortage, there aren’t a lot of opportunities near me to test these out myself.

I was between the VAD507 and TD-50K2 and went with the TD, mostly because of the TD-50X module. The pads and hardware can always be upgraded, which made more sense to me than upgrading the module later.

I can relate to that comment you made about the “increase” in pricing. I bought a KT-10 kick pedal less than 3 years ago and it’s $80+ more expensive now. Prices are crazy!

Hi 65drums! You always have great videos and reviews on these electronic kits. Have you done a video on the best budget electronic drum kits to gig with? If not, would you do one this year? I see you mention live situations in some of your videos but not one that solely talks about gigging with them. Like a top kit list. Thanks!

Hey Justin, great video as always, so sorry for the off-topic question. With the new software fix for the Simmons SD1250, how would you rate it vs the Alesis Crimson 2 SE? First time drummer, looking for advice at this price point that comes with the sort of features these two sets bring. Thoughts?

Please do a noise test on the 506 and td50kv when you do the comparison video. No one shows how loud the pads are
