Important note: As the name suggests, photorespiration is NOT the same as normal plant/cellular respiration, which is a necessary process.

Now let’s make genetically edited people to make them do photosynthesis

Rubisco isn't " confused ", enzymes are highly specific in their function. When the plants are in a surrounding where the oxygen level is higher and the level if carbon dioxide is significantly lower, in such case Rubisco has the affinity to bind oxygen instead carbon dioxide. Also this mechanism only occurs in C3 plants meanwhile there are plants that exist in nature that are already efficient in fixing carbon dioxide in high oxygen and low carbon dioxide levels such as C4 and CAM plants

If hearing the words "gene gun" makes you think of an airgun loaded with a metal pellet that is covered in genetic material and then that gun shooting the pellet into a metal net behind which is the plant and the genetic material flies off the pellet, through the net, and through the plant cell walls thus embedding itself in the plant's cells then that's an accurate mental image since that's exactly what a gene gun is.

Sigh, science curiosities give me peace of mind that there are a lot of folks out there are working to really make our planet better. Thanks for what you do.

It's amazing how many new ways to combat climate change have been discovered recently

Genetic engineering is actually a field I’m super interested in. I feel like it could do so much good and could genuinely solve a lot of problems like Carbon recapture.

What I learnt at school is that the photorespiration process happens at night and it is necessary for them.
If we genetically alter them to consume more CO², will it harm the plant? Reduce it's life???

Let's genetically modify human to perform photosynthesis like piccolo in dbz😂

Ot doesn't "get confused" it is eating the sugar...

How did we actually monitor the carbon captured?

C4 plants do it without being genetically modified.

Photorespiration is also really awful for the plant itself so this process also helps the plant

If we consume less, we don’t have to alter nature. Just because trees don’t talk back, doesn’t mean we can violate its natural design just to suit our reluctance for change. 🥂

There is some important context needed here. Rubisco only usually binds to oxygen when C3 plants are under heat stress. This is because the plant closes it’s stomata which traps the gases inside the cell. Other plant types like C4 and CAM plants limit photorespiration risk in different ways

I love Cleo's videos but two questions remain:
1) how will they capture the carbon after the plant decays?
2) is this study actually trustworthy, the source is from a BLOG POST?!? (with a whitepaper cited) I really enjoy Cleo's work however if she is going to report on cutting edge science she needs to go to reputable peer reviewed sources that come from PNAS, PLOS Genetics, Nature Biotechnology, etc. Studies without peer review could easily be biased to generate hype for their company to accumulate seed funding.

i dont think saying "it gets confused" is fair. i feel it's more like nature does its thing but trees taking in oxygen feel like a "waste" so we modify them to suit our needs.
and btw, the amount of oxygen a tree takes in is astronomically low compared to the amount it gives during photosynthesis

Oooo this can make more dense oxygen enviroment thus cheaper oxygen for divers

Wouldn't this also mean that the plants mutated by this discovery can also grow faster?
