Simulation of MBT-70 tank projectile hitting the frontal armor of Object 277 tank

152mm XM578E1 (Heavy Tungsten Alloy penetrator, maraging steel jacket APFSDS) at 1430 m/s

vs

Object 277 turret front armor (~270mm, at ~45 degrees)*

MBT-70 152mm XM150E5 gun muzzle velocity - 1478 m/s. 1430 m/s refers to a distance of approximately 0.5 km.

*The area representing the average turret armor protection (between the weakest area near the mantle and the strongest area at the edge of the turret.

Object 277 is a very obscure tank not many people know about. It was developed as a "conventional" version of the much more famous object 279. The turret was very similar to the 279's turret and it used literally the exact same gun. The M-65 130mm rifled cannon. A beast indeed.

Watching this has given me a desire to see comparisons of multiple tanks shooting at the same target to see the differences in effectiveness/penetration directly. Obviously we can make reasonable inferences from the numbers alone, but seeing a direct comparison 'sticks' better as well as allowing us to see smaller differences.

I was always curious how powerful the 6 inch gun could have been with better dart designs.

I think this demonstrates how early apfsds projectiles had relatively poor flat penetration compared to heat rounds of the day.

270 sloped like that is like 350 to 400mm effective, that's no joke for cold war

When i read MBT-70 i immediately thought you were gonna model a anti tank missile. But then i remembered that anti tank missiles make your computer catch fire when you want to model them.

Lets make a Kursk 1943 "first encounter of two beasts" simulation: SU-152's 152mm BR-540B vs Panther upper front plate at 1000m

Hello! Could a simulation of an HSTV-L upper front plate be made? Against the projectile of your choice, I don't have one in mind. Thanks!

Now this should be... Wait, it didn't go through? Not even half way? Daaamn, that's some strong Stalinium

looking at how fast graphics are evolving... maybe in a couple of years we can have such fast computers that we can have games like Warthunder simulate every hit like one can only dream

That is a big hole for that projectile. I also love APFSDS barely moves up or down and instead just deforms because speed of the projectile. Those holes reminds me the meteorite marks on moon.

What mechanical properties were used for the maraging steel and core? Granted 270mm at 45 is about 382mm LoS.

Coming out of a 152, that is disappointing.

I would love to see more simulations showing the 277

Could you make an video of an shell that's hits the same part twice, and that doesn't pen in the first time?

Could you do the same thing with the conquerors turret? It’s got some gnarly angles I’d love to see maybe t62 APDS or some other early MBTs apds

Could you do a simulation of an ERA detonating on a plate that's too thin? Like yes it could stop an ATGM or maybe even a KE projectile but maybe the flyer plate facing the armor will penetrate it instead.

Love the 277 in WoT absolute blast to play
