This scene basically shows how little Lois has going for her. She has so little that something as meaningless as being the customer of the week for some little store becomes her whole life objective, because in reality she really doesn't have anything else.

Tbh that's what I felt when I was an intern at a company where they bought cake to everyone at their birthdays. Even if their birthday fell on a holiday or a weekend, they got cake the day before or after. In my case, they didn't even remembered my birthday and it also was a holiday. I was waiting for cake when I slightly told them the next day but I got none. I was like "it's ok, I'm an intern so it doesn't matter" but then, 2 weeks later, they bought a cake to some high school student who was a client and they even remembered his birthday like a month before. I was devastated. But that's when I realized "if they don't care, neither will I" and from that day I stopped doing things to get noticed. It was actually a relief.

I can’t lie, this episode made me feel bad about lois’s life, she had pretty much everything before she met Peter and had a family, lived a good, proper wealthy life and had the potential to gain a lot of things no other middle class woman would get. Now she’s just lived the past 18 years of her life as nothing more as a house wife and a maid to her whole family who take her for granted and doesn’t appreciate her. This scene really showed that even the smallest things could’ve made Lois’s day.
