"The Open Window" by Saki is a 1914 short story about Framton Nuttel, who is terrified by his new neighbor's niece, Vera's, fanciful lies.

- Framton meets Vera while visiting his neighbors, who explain that her uncle and his brothers-in-law drowned on a hunting trip three years ago on a moor. Her aunt leaves the window open because she expects them to return.

- When the hunters return, who had only left that morning, Framton believes they are ghosts and flees. Vera explains that he left because of his fear of dogs, which was triggered by the appearance of the hunters' spaniel.
