This was an incredible find for me. I first learned of its existence last year but at that time it was not legally accessible to the average citizen. Earlier this week I spoke with the park manager, Philip Rand, who provided information indispensable in locating this site. This property was first acquired in 1807 by John Addison who developed it as a cotton plantation, Addison Blockhouse was originally built in 1816 as an outside kitchen, and was used as a fort during the Second Seminole War and is the only remaining evidence of Addison Plantation’s existence, the house and everything else constructed of wood was burned to the ground by the Indians and the land was never used again.
