Back in Time for Brixton -
Episode 1
A family give up their modern lives for one summer to experience what life was like for Caribbeans who immigrated to Britain in the postwar period.
Beginning in 1948, the year the Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury and discharged its passengers, the Irwin family travel through the 1950s and 60s, guided by presenter Giles Coren and social historian Emma Dabiri who introduce them to their new homes as well as the events of the time. Along the way the Irwins discover the food, work and entertainment of first-generation immigrants making their lives in Brixton.
In 1959, the whole family get a lesson in 1950s steel pan from EastEnders star Rudolph Walker, and in 1962, dad Weininger gets some fashion tips from 60s singer Kenny Lynch. In 1966, mum Janice embraces her role as a nurse at a time when the NHS recruited directly in the West Indies for staff.
As the family's living situation improves over the years, they decide to see the 60s out with a blues party.

As an American of partial West Indian descent, this is something worthwhile to learn as a part of my history. If my ancestors had gotten on a different boat, that would have been my life.

Loved these two videos - I would have loved an longer look into what they faced. Was such an eye opener. Only ever heard my Grandfathers point of view - so seeing this was such a delight.

They did one in Canada called "Back In Time For Dinner" where they went from the 1940's to the 2000's. I've always wanted to see A Documentary about what it's like being Black from Jamaica and coming to England. They have Lucille on Call The Midwife and I think it's great. I would love for them to do a Documentary about what it was like going to School from the 1940's to now.

What is the difference in 2017 compared to 1950? Now it is Mexican people living the
same way!. 8 people living in a one bedroom apartment!. 3 families 3 kids each small
efficiency apartment!.

God, it's like living in a British Version of a Ghetto. Yet you learn so much and if there was one thing they learned how blessed they are to have what they have.

Emma would have made a Brilliant University Professor. She would be perfect to do a Teaching Position for One Year at a HCBU (Historically Black College University). The kids would be blown away with the Films and the like.
