What's even worse is that many parents guilt their kids into attending college at an age where you’re still pretty much much dependant on them.

The student loan crisis is one of the most dangerous things to have ever happened to young people. Young people are being forced to pay for a piece of paper that they can’t afford.

Imagine being $250, 000 in debt just to work for someone who barely passed high school and started a business.

They will let a 19 year old take out a student loan but won’t let that same 19 year old take out a business loan

I just hit 30. I went to a top 25 university after getting a 3.98 in high school. My parents encouraged me to take the “better” university with no assistance vs scholarship at a lower tier college. I ended up $100k in debt on variable rates at 10%, having to pay $1, 000 a month in student loans while only making about $30K once I got out of college. I want to scream any time a parent wants me to talk to their kids to encourage them to go to college. It’s not worth it. Go to your local community college library and study for free, apply for a job once you can advertise you know things without a degree. Otherwise what’s the point of that piece of paper?

As a Canadian, I've heard about this, but hearing that Student Debt in America is equal to _Canada's ENTIRE ECONOMY_ blew my mind. That's pretty insane, eh?

How to college:
1. Pick a good college located in your hometown.
2. Get a high-paying part-time job.
3. Get a scholarship.
4. Either stay at your parents' house or get an apartment for low-income people. Do not get a dorm.

I love how it’s a well known fact that having a college degree does not guarantee you a better job than someone without one, yet people still practically take out a mortgage that will take them longer to pay off than an actual mortgage. I’m a truck driver and I make more than my friend who has a master’s degree and I never set foot on a college campus and all I do is drive around listening to music or YouTube all day.

I was so proud of myself for being a first generation college grad in my family. Now I have 120k in debt from going to an in-state university and well over half of that debt is private, so it'll still exist even after I'm dead.

As a college student I think part of the problem is the idea of a "respectable college". Personally I go to a state school that only costs ~5700 a semester in tuition before scholarships etc. If you go to college for the college experience don't go. Go for the education at a reasonable price at a school with a good enough program. Go to a community college for degrees that you can, or for two of the four years to get basics out of the way for a fraction of the cost. There are lots of options but no one talks about them. People only talk about getting into the big private universities because of prestige or their favorite teams school.

One thing school made me realize is that it ain’t what ya know it’s who you know. Homework, tests, etc are useless once you enter the work field. It’s a cliche but start NETWORKING and connecting with people that push you closer to your goals.

my entire life i have been guilted into going to higher education. i wasn't even sure this was what i wanted as my skill set is fine arts. i thought, "what jobs could i possibly obtain through university that i can't obtain by myself?" well, regardless of what i thought i am here now. in university. my tuition is high and i have a new guilt from my parents: the cost. i feel that they are always reminding me how expensive i am. they pressured me to be here and now there's even more pressure about the cost of me being here! it feels like a control method in my eyes.

A lot of people go to school simply so they don't have to feel ashamed at family parties/etc. when someone asks them "what they're doing" with their life. If you can say that you're in university, you always pass that question -- even if you're studying in premed at a second-tier school (or worse) and have only a 5% shot as "succeeding" in your field / etc.

I said this to my father 12 years ago when I left college. I knew it was a scam.
We disagreed for several years after, now we both agree.

I'm glad my dad sat me down and explained shit like this to me before I went and wasted years of my life and thousands of dollars pursuing something that I had zero chance of supporting myself with at ANY point in the future. The goal day one of attending a trade school or pursuing any form of higher education should be "Will I be able to support myself with this without going insane".

I spent four years studying for an useless degree just because parents pushed me to go to college early, when actually I just wanted a basic job to buy a few stuff I liked with my own money; I would go to college only after I choose which career I wanted.
Looking back, I think the better option would have been to go to a trade school, work in decent blue collar job, make some money, and then start searching for a nice college degree...or do an online course in technology, business or marketing.
