Autocratic threat is significant ... in the United States. The us is in no position to police the world on this when the threat is greatest inside its borders.

Sounds hollow when the GOP is still courting a budding autocrat.

As an Australian, our deranged totalitarian PM who is doing everything he can to force us to be a Pentecostal autocracy attending an anti autocracy summit is so mind blowingly ironic that you can't help but laugh.

The autocratic threat is internal as much as external and is now just having a temporary delay. Half the voters will blindly take that path at the next opportunity.

i guess so we allowed trump based on the 1804 electoral college from 1804. after he got nearly 3 million fewer votes. its going to take awhile to get the respect back.

The threats posed by an economically and militarily powerful nation that might use its power to bully and threaten and intimidate other countries, that might circumvent or even blatantly ignore the rules established by international treaties and laws... these threats are very real and they have defeated the best efforts of those who believe in a 'rules-based' international order for many years. We know this because we have seen these rules brushed aside in the invasion of Iraq (contrary to the UN Charter), the mining of Nicaragua's ports (when the perpetrator simply ignored a ruling of the International Court), the decades long embargo and blockade of Cuba, the constant threats against Venezuela, the inciting and direct organising of military coups in numerous countries around the world over many decades (Chile, Guatemala, Zaire, South Vietnam... etc), the opportunistic use of military intervention (citing some supposed concern for 'human rights') whenever convenient in advancing a foreign policy goal, while simultaneously arming and supporting brutal dictatorships who commit far worse abuses and atrocities, the support for aggressive military expansion and annexation of the territory of neighbours by one country (Israel for example) while denouncing the same actions when perpetrated by another (Russia perhaps). All these are examples of what happens when a superpower thinks it is so mighty that it can simply ignore or break the rules and laws set up to allow the 'international community' to function, and as a former Director of the CIA, which was at the heart of organising and implementing much of this lawlessness, Mr Brennan will know this very well. China is certainly shaping up to be a bully and a threat to many smaller and weaker countries, but it has a long way to go before it comes anywhere near the record set by the brand leader in this market.

autocrats look great to many people because they're able to get things done we can learn to get along in the US, we won't be able to accomplish needed goals, like providing healthcare, a decent living wage, was a rebuttal to our didn't do a thing for the people, but hope springs eternal for the desperate.
