Shell: You Know That Climate Change Promise We Made, We Didn't Really Mean It

"Fossil fuel giant Shell has abandoned a plan to cut oil production by 1-2% per year until the end of this decade and announced bumper new payouts for shareholders.

The oil major said that it planned to keep the amount of oil that it extracts from wells around the world at the same level as today.

Production from oil and gas reservoirs naturally declines by around 5% every year, so maintaining production at current levels will require major investment from the oil giant."*

I’m so in agreement with you, I’m also very scared of these people polluting our planet . I can’t breath money, I can’t drink money and I can’t eat dirt. Funny thing is neither can their families.

Every dollar of that $40 billion will come directly from government subsidies, based on prior decades of such funding.

Nationalize the oil companies and use the money for a massive WWII era effort for renewables.

Actions speak louder than words, because talk is cheap. I don't believe anything that corporations say because their actions never benefits anyone but them.

My Great Grandfather had a Model T that was an electric car. Let's get back to that.

Lots of companies do this. It makes us feel like something is being done about climate change and population, when it isn’t. I’ve been recycling for 40 yrs. Turns out almost none of it is recycled, but it kept us busy taking all our “recyclables “ down the street every week.

There's a very, very simple explanation for this type of corporate behaviour - sociopathy.

There is enough oil in reserve to destroy human life on earth 3 times, now, but what the hell, drill baby drill. This suicide pact we're on has no end but death and destruction, YAY, money.

I would not worry so much about prices in 2930 because the chance that civilization will exist on that is exceedingly small and the chance that any human beings will be alive is only slightly better! But just like “Duck and Cover drills” of the 1950s the concept that we can stop the environmental disaster that was set in motion in 1750 is just a distraction from reality!

They will not be investing that much because they get rebates from the Government which goes back to bonuses and shareholders.

Former ‘Royal Dutch’ Shell moved to the UK for a reason. The Anglo Saxon world is much more friendly to the shareholders of Shell. While the Rhine economic model the Netherlands is part of, makes it more difficult to put profits before the environment. Not that. Shell ever really cared for that at all, just look at what they did in NIgeria.

Unilever did the same move for the same reason.

Why would they take a risk on something new? They've got money in the ground and they're not going to leave it there... You can't get THEM to change. You have to MAKE them change.

I dont know if you're seeing the same ads as I'm seeing in Canada, but my Facebook feed currently has one from some sort of consortium (PR group?) touting the petroleum industries commitment to cleaning up CO² emissions. They almost had me convinced... LOL... They wish!

It should also be noted that there are Climate Refugees right here in the US. Coastal erosion caused a whole Indigenous community in Louisiana to have to be relocated.

We are actually burning more fossil fuels than we were 20 years ago and fossil fuel usage is continuing to increase. We already have the technology and resources to be completely fossil fuel free in under 2 years, but we lack the intelligence and willingness to use them. Fossil fuels are actually obsolete commodities and can easily be replaced with cheaper environmentally friendly alternatives. It is actually cheaper to convert everything from using fossil fuels to alternatives than to continue using fossil fuels.

Just an idea, but how about we throw them in jail for mass extinction?
