Those horns when the Riders of Rohan appear still brings chills. Thor arriving to save Wakanda is pretty cool as well.

I agree with your #1. Still gives me goose bumps to this day. Quite frankly it’s the most epic scene in all cinema history.

My highschool trip was to watch The Return of the King.
Man, when the horn of the Rohirrim sounded, everyone, and I'm talking a theature full of teenagers, went dead quiet.
When the Rohirrim rode up, the erruption of cheers was louder than any surround sound.

Theoden rallying the cavalry just before the charge brings tears to your eyes and hair to your chest

One of my faves is the Reavers appearing out of the nebula at the end of Serenity. It's both reinforcements and poetic justice, because the Alliance's folly created the monsters that the Serenity crew bait into showing up to defeat the Alliance armada. And the Alliance operative goes from cocky to "oh, we're screwed." As Mal says when it kicks off "Chickens come home to roost."

Interesting fact about the fleet from Dunkirk. One of the boats was a yacht that was owned and captained by a retired merchant seaman named Charles Lightoller. He was the highest ranking survivor of the crew of the Titanic. He personally took his boat out to aid in the evacuation.

I feel like not enough credit is given to the score in so many of these moments. That's a huge part of what makes it work so well.

You missed a really powerful one from television.

In Babylon 5 when Delenn returns to save the station. Season 3, episode 10 "Severed Dreams". Pure magic.

When that Tiger Tank blew up in “Saving Private Ryan” I literally shouted ‘OH BULL CRAP! A .45 ISN’T GOING TO DO THAT!’ Then the P-51 flew past. My date looked at me and laughed, and she laughed, and she laughed….

Battlestar Galactica, when Galactica is unable to fight and unable to run above New Caprica. Adama tells the crew it's been an honor and we have a zoom out of the Glactica being relentlessly beaten and unable to do anything when Pegasus comes past the camera instantly putting one Basestar down.

"What do you see?"

"...Home."

Branagh's delivery of that single-word line in Dunkirk just nails it.

Twice a tear fell down my cheek in LOTR, and they were both in The Two Towers. Once when they had the far away shot of Gandalf and the Balrog falling toward the water, and Gandalf riding with the Rohirrim down the slope and the sun rising behind him with that musical climax. I can't believe it's already been a couple of decades.

One I would have included was at the end of "we were soldiers". The Americans are charging the Vietnamese but they are ready and waiting and you assume that Mel Gibson and the boys will be wiped out and then the helicopters appear and lay down a deadly barrage and save the day. Great stuff....and in Sam Peckinpaw slow motion. What a climax!

Aragon showing up with the traitor ghost army was epic and should have been included.

One thing in the Dunkirk clip that most people will miss (right fellow swabies?) is when the small boys are passing the destroyer (big grey boat). The crew is lined up on the side next to the volunteers, "manning the rail", i.e. saluting them, and giving thanks for their help. Last time *I* manned the rail was when our ship pulled into Pearl Harbor. We saluted the remains of USS Arizona, the first major USN ship to die in WWII.

Yes, yes, yes, YES!

Eoden's last charge, the Ride of the Rohirrim!! The salute he gives his riders before the charge, clanging his sword against their spears, the yell, the CHARGE!!!

It never fails to bring me to tears. Even seeing this (too short) clip here. I had a feeling this could be #1, believed it had to be, especially after you mention the charge at Helm's Deep.

*Ahem* Good choice; carry on.

I was really concerned there when both Avengers Endgame and LotR came in so early. But you rectified that briliantly. Ride of the Rhohirim and the Assembly are probably peak cinema for their respective generations.

I would have included the scene in the first "Matrix" movie when Trinity and Neo show up in the Huey and rescue Morpheus from the agents.

One of the coolest scenes ever!

Luke Skywalker's redemption in the disney world was perhaps the biggest moment for any real old school Star Wars fan who'd felt betrayed and fucked over by the trainwreck that was the sequels. Man tears everywhere.
