I wanted to make a simple video that would demonstrate how the Nikon Z 9 autofocus preforms in the video mode. I hope that this video gives you some real world examples of how well it works! As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions or comments!

Great video! The time you took to run those tests and then do the comparison was just superb. I wonder how this test would replicate on bird AF. Thanks for this very useful video!

Regarding the truck scene. You can change settings for how fast camera reacts when subject is blocked. Maybe I missed you mentioning that.

Thanks for taking the time to do the video. On the subject tracking, you have to adjust the sensitivity of the tracking/focus in camera to get good results. This is pretty much the same for all cameras, if set correctly, the camera won't switch to another subject too quickly when blocked or obscured and the tracking will be better. I think for better results, you should have used the subject tracking feature, since it is a moving subject. I didn't notice anything to indicate the tracking feature was activated, I may be wrong, let me know if that was active or not.

I am now using the A7R V as a hybrid camera and have been playing around with the subject tracking for video, to learn how to best use it. Typically for video, I leave it in the setting the camera comes with but there are times, when it will stray and I know I have adjusted it to track when I put a product up in front of my face and I want it to switch faster to the item. I had some challenges with my Z6 II doing this and it seems it would occur more when the light is low, that is one of the reasons I opted to get the A7R V. I have to now learn how to setup different shooting modes so I can select depending on what I am shooting. I was familiar with doing this on Nikon cameras, I have to figure that out on the Sony gear.

I know the 2x rule is supposed to be adequate. But, I wonder if playing with the shutter speed even faster would change the hit rate on each frame. Also, I couldn't tell for sure; but, part of that blur could also be due to the lens motor not being able to keep up with the speed of the dog, and the nature of the sporadic motion (nearly off camera and moving rapidly and unpredictably forward or back. I'd also be curious to know if using certain video codecs affects the amount of processor power that might otherwise be used for the tracking, etc. Super interesting. Thanks.
