I hate how much consumerism is forced down our throats on TT. every other video is some influencer shilling a product for commission

I work at a skincare store and the amount of literal children that come in to buy $75 skincare products that will destroy their skin solely because it’s on Tiktok is insane.

In fairness 9/10 times I see someone say "Tiktok made me buy it" its some dropshipper trying to manufacture hype to funnel people to their storefront

The amount of times I’ve NOT bought something because I “don’t want to deal with it when I move” is astounding. It’s a great reason.

I hate how “do what makes you happy” has been overused by the companies to sell more junk to people, and now it’s associated with consumption rather than various healthy activities that can actually result in more happiness and fulfillment

Love the whole de-influencing talk. I’m personally really into fashion and have learnt the hard way that just because I like it doesn’t mean I’ll wear it, there’s beauty in just appreciating things without having to buy them

It's just overconsumption all over again. I refuse to use TikTok to be honest

This channel is the sobering backhand we all need to confront the reality of our individual reckless spending 😂 the internet makes it so easy to buy soooo much crap we don’t need.

"Algorithms are going to get better" is the most concise prediction of the future of humanity that I can imagine. We've fed the beast a decade and a half worth of data that tells it all of the things we like, how our relationships work, all the best ways to trigger our dopamine responses, and how to best convice us of things that aren't true. When it was humans who had to comb through that data for patterns it wasn't too bad, but now that AI is looking, it'll find patterns and applications we'd never have thought about. I can't help but feel like I'm biking down a steep hill and I'm reaching the point where I can't keep my feet on the pedals anymore because they're spinning too fast.

I stopped overbuying after I realized that none of it would make me less lonely, fill more fulfilled, or the slightest bit happier. This is going to sound slightly pretentious, but I think we give a lot ourselves and a lot of our hopes to inanimate objects in the name of “aesthetics” and “self care”. I realized that the obsession with stuff is like a form of idol worship. Even though we never bow before it, we bask in its glory, hoping that we too could become “godlike” in beauty, joy, and fulfillment.

I've never used TikTok, and this is one more reason why I will keep it that way

Your point about absolutely hating every item you own when it’s time to move is so spot on moving always makes me realize just how much utter junk I own I try to be better about getting rid of it and accepting less junk from others but it’s a long road

Easiest way to not give in to tiktok made me buy it
1. delete tiktok
2. be broke (most effective xD)

“So what makes you happy”, if consistently giving into materialism makes you happy then your definition of happy is hollow

My mindset as of late is, how many hours do I need to work to get this item and is it worth working those hours for this item? I’ve actually started a “spending journal” where I write down every time I spend money and what it was for. It’s really eye opening seeing how much you actually spend vs how much you think you spend

Excellent video! Walmart had a "tiktok made me buy it" makeup display months ago. Just the phrase filled me with the same kind of instant rage that flares up every time I have to deal with people from the local cult (something I consider Quite Telling).

it's scary... esp when buyers get lulled into downloading apps like Temu.

I relate to the hatred of clutter so much. Every time I move, packing up my belongings is so stressful. It makes me want to get rid of damn near everything. I’m like, “Why do I even have this?”

I'm glad you mentioned individual change and pessimism. One person not buying junk won't save the world but multiple individuals not doing that can make change. Something everyone can do is just buy fewer things.
