Try the Woolly Thistle if you are looking for yarn for the Shetland Wool Week hat. They are the US distributor for Uradale and they regularly carry Jamieson and Smith.

Kamchatka is the easternmost part of Russia and very cold. Having double knitted garments named after that place makes sense.

I love your 'darn'ing solution! So funny. After an interstate move, I recently finished sorting my yarn stash and several projects, most not even started. I'm still trying to set up my craft room, a daunting task when one is a multi-crafter. I've discovered I have a lot of projects, knitting, sewing, and needlework that I need to either finish or pass on to someone who will finish. I like the idea of a blanket with the yarn from the breed study. Something that is useful and available. Great video, and I'm going to get lost in the rabbit hole of the Gunnister Man too.

Always a pleasure when you visit. I am here but mostly watching and listening quietly because it's a great way to learn about knitting history. Thank you for all your research, being so thorough and sharing the results. I am trying hard to finish a shawl that my late Mother started about 12 years ago and I found while sorting through my stuff.
Looking forward to seeing you again soon. Take care.

What a fascinating video! I've been researching the lives of my late grandather's ancestors, most of whom arrived in what is now MA, in the mid 16 1600s. What fun to think about and visuslize their clothing, right down to their stockings. I can hardly wait to follow the links you've provided.

You really send me to so many varied, informative, deliciously interesting places! I was never a fan of “history” in school (perhaps memorization of dates, on a timeline etc). Looking back, I feel that if there was a correlation with OTHER things in that time frame, I may have found more interesting. Everyone learns differently, it’s taken me years (!!) to “ignore” the numbers, pick a point & go forward or back in time to grasp xxx event/s.
Now, I find history (of the knitting/fabric variety) so intriguing, I can’t stop!
Thanks for opening new doors, worlds, to my brain-I’m now like a sponge! Can’t get enough!
My FIF project is needed, but I must tackle in small bits. Scary what is packed in bins. Eek!

I knit just a bit, has been only 3 yrs, a novice for sure. But am ‘enthralled’ with your channel……avid watcher. What you produce is beyond the imagination…..there should be a special ‘academic’ degree for what you know…..thank you so very much for your creativity and inquisitiveness and willingness to share.

Lots of interesting tidbits and information. The Woolly Thistle in New Hampshire carries both the yarns you me mentioned from the Shetlands as well as other yarns from that region. 🇬🇧

Hi Rox,
Your tidbit about Shetland wool really hit or should I say my LYS, Heritage Spinning and Weaving in Lake Orion, MI.
The Owner, Joan Sheridan, is a well know designer and teacher of fair Isle. Her stunning shop has a focus on fair Isle and the yarn of Jamison and Jamison & Smith of which she has every single color in the fingering weight, from both companies. So it is all available in the USA. The shop does a huge amount of shipping throughout the USA. So no need for over seas shipping. Next time you visit Michigan swing over to Lake Orion and stop in.

I planned to knit socks and mittens for my little granddaughters for Christmas. I ran out of time to get them done for Christmas. Today, I finished the second pair of mittens and have the socks ready to send. I am pleased with myself. Now I am darning my husband's socks. I still have time to work on my cardigan that was put on hold. Yay! I am progressing right along. ✅️ 👏 👏 👏
