Asteroid Redirect Mission: Crew Segment

NASA announced the next step in the plan to retrieve an asteroid boulder from a near-Earth asteroid and redirect it into a stable orbit around the moon to carry out human exploration missions, all in support of advancing the nation's journey to Mars. For NASA’s Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM), a robotic spacecraft will capture a boulder from the surface of an asteroid for exploration by astronauts in the mid-2020s to test a number of new capabilities needed for future human expeditions to deep space, including to Mars. This animation illustrates the crewed part of ARM, showing how astronauts will travel to the asteroid using NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and the Orion spacecraft, investigate the boulder and return a sample of the asteroid back to Earth.

This mission is for all Kerbal Kind, uh I mean Mankind. This will be an epic en-devour and we are well on our way with the Orion space capsule and SLS rocket testing.

Astronaut hype video. Is this what they watch before they take off? I'm excited but 2020 is only 5 years away. Go for it NASA!

Modules may be prepositioned around the moon for habitat or other purposes, which the Orion can dock with as needed on multiple missions. There may be a series of these missions in the 2020s in preparation for Mars, according to the current plan.Getting to Mars and back is much more challenging than people realize. It's a different order of magnitude than previous missions.

Wait! In 48 hours, we will have a near-Earth asteroid with an uncertainty rating of "7" possibly clip our moon and no-one saw it conning till Oct 10th. If NASA was really able to "redirect" an asteroid, how much prep time would they need? Here's 9 days! What's your ETA NASA?

Why would we put an asteroid in orbit around the Moon vs around the Earth?

Besides being drug free what does one need to become a NASA engineer?

Sadly, this is silly. I understand why NASA is proposing this (uses SLS; they can afford it) but seriously... can we spend our money on something a little more important?

what the hell is this? overly complex, no need for humans
