Florida Parks: Explore Dry Tortugas National Park

The Dry Tortugas National Park, a series of islands 70 miles from Key West, is a place of great beauty, history and solitude.

There’s no road to Dry Tortugas. You take a boat or seaplane, but only if weather permits. You can camp near Fort Jefferson on the island called Garden Key, but don’t forget the can opener because the nearest convenient store is a long way off. You can visit for the day, but again be prepared for whatever. This is a special, isolated park where the screeching birds and the breeze rustling through the treetops provide the soundtrack. About 60,000 tourists visit annually. In comparison, Great Smoky Mountains National Park attracts 11 million visitors who jam the road with their vehicles.

Several hours of sailing out of key west. Incredibly remote. Fort reeks with history. The birds aren't even afraid of humans.

I'm going in July! I can't wait! I saw pictures of it years ago and forgot about it until I saw a picture again and looked it up. I'll probably leave an update after my trip!

Though I try to avoid heavily populated tourist atractions, I'm hoping to visit Dry Tourtugas next year on my sailboat as a stop on my way to the Caribbean, and stay a couple of days.

This is on my list of national parks that arnt overrated. This place deserves attention. Its sad so little is above water. Imagine 5k years ago. That island would probably be 10x the sive and connected to the other keys

I went here in 2000. It was beautiful. They tell u don’t swim in the mote..imagine my surprise while swimming around the island then seeing a tourist slashing around swimming in it. It has a ton of bacteria from when they dumped human waste etc in it🤢🤮..

The park and fort itself looks amazing, but what were they thinking building it in such a remote location?! Seems pretty terrifying.

If so far from land what did it protect? Couldn't enemy ships just sail around it?

"unique" means one of kind. You should never say "very unique". That phrase makes little sense yet people say it all the time like "mass exodus" and other terms.
