I find it refreshing that she freely said that she misspoke. Most politicians will not do so.

Marianne is the only candidate that truly wants what’s best for the working class

Personally I like that she's human and admitted to wanting to impress a spiritual person she admired. Better than hiding it.

The fact that you constantly smear her is disgusting

David - I spent 35 years working in mental health diagnosing people. So I completely understand Williamson's point, which you seem to have entirely missed. She was commenting on the inadequacy of using vague psychiatric labels like "clinical depression", when in fact there are numerous types of depressive "disorders" including major depression, dysthymia, bereavement, and quite a few others.

Furthermore, numerous studies have demonstrated the serious problem of "inter rater reliabilty" and validity in the current diagnostic process. Thus, a client describing the same list of symptoms and evidencing the same behaviors may be given a wide range of DSM diagnoses depending on the clinician's professional and personal biases, their theoretical orientation and other factors (including whether the client's insurance company covers a particular diagnosis).

PLEASE don't start into this kind of nitpicky catty analysis already when discussing Williamson (or RFK, Jr., or anyone who isn't Joe Biden.) Do you really want to encourage another ugly election season? Also, calling a woman crazy when you don't understand/agree with her point isn't super impressive to me. You're better than this.

What Marianne actually teaches: Forgive others. ❤Understand and sit with your pain. Look deeply at social issues and suffering. Meditate. Connect to your higher purpose in life. Then SEE…how’s your mental health? ;) :) ❤ check in with yourself…have you forgiven? Have you meditated? Have you sat with your pain? Have you contemplated deeply societal issues? Have you applied all this to your life? This is the only true testimonial of her work are those who’ve lives have improved. It takes a brave soul to do all this. I am so grateful to her for helping me out of the depths of despair and giving me hope. This can never be taken away from her.

She's better than Biden though. I wonder what David thought about Biden saying you're not black if you vote for Trump. That seems far worse

I don't think opening up a conversation about the deeper causes of & pointing to perhaps a broader treatment for clinical depression is in any ways wrong. I do think using the clip selectively to cause others to (wrongly) fear Marianne is denying the physical existence of clinical depression is wrong. At the same time, I can understand why why the established way of knowing & managing clinical depression would be resistant to that deeper conversation.

I also think by Marianne Williamson wanting to impress a figure like Russell Brand she was suggesting she wanted to use humor, good storytelling, and a probably health dose of skepticism of the status quo to connect w the wide range of people he does. Again toward a broader coalition of people beyond the established spaces. To the extent anyone wants to "other" Russell Brand and his followers, I'd implore you to converse w them.

Trying to impress Russell Brand is quite a time waster.

Look, she’s not entirely wrong. I’ve been through the mental health system, I’ve been to three different mental hospitals. I’ve got ptsd, Severe persistent MDD, OCPD, and generalized anxiety. It’s very hard nowadays to distinguish people with actual depression and people having a bad time. The problem is meds are being prescribed too fast. Instead of actually treating the problem it’s all too common you get your meds and never talk to the doctor again. Then these people just rely on meds that don’t work very well to deal with their problems they never sorted out. The mental health industry is a huge scam right now and there is a lot of shady stuff that happens especially in mental hospitals.

Mental health is no joke or anything to play with. Russel Brand is an attention grabber and is out of touch with reality.

Marianne Williamson is a good spiritual adviser. But Russel Brand is completely Bonkers. But maybe they had shared something in common before Russel Brand went completely nuts.

Williamson shouldnt have walked back her statement. “Depression” is a diagnosis of professionals which includes insurance bureaucrats with no medical training. Sometimes it’s helpful. Sometimes it isn’t. The only relevant question is - what is the treatment plan? And FYI - the function and creation of the DSM is to assist insurance companies in their ability to refuse to pay for treatment, so in that sense, all diagnoses are BS. Clinicians don’t always even need diagnoses. What they need is a treatment plan. A course of action. PS. As if Williamson is the only politician who said some stupid shit? The question is - why pig pile on Williamson? For every stupid thing she said, Biden said 10!

Russell Brand would be a hard one to banter with

I don't believe she was just being "glib". As always, it isn't just the words we use that gives them meaning. It is, as much, the manner, tone and emotive nuance we attach to our words that gives them the meaning that we intended.
.
Ms. Williamson stated her opinion without hesitancy, question or lack of conviction. Rather, she uttered her statement accentuating a belief in what she was saying and a solid conviction that "clinical depression" is nothing more than a clinician stating a client/patient is depressed, and anything more than that is merely the clinic pulling a scam. That is not only utterly and completely untrue, it is a real disservice to the clinical sciences.

It sounds more like a tongue in cheek criticism of the problems in therapy not really denial of clinical depression.Wanting to impress Russel brand probably meant she competed with Brand s outrageous statement but it it fell short of humor

If she does that sitting across from Russel Brand, what would she do if she were sitting across from another world leader….
