In case it wasn’t clear this is a song based on the white flags message back from the days of the l’manberg independence war.

I know it’s been a while since I posted this video, but I wanna put a disclaimer here:

TLDR: Say “Down-trod and drastic” instead from here on out when you’re singing along, please.

DISCLAIMER:
In this song I use the word “spastic” in a colloquial sense. That was not okay. It is a word that has been used in a derogatory sense against people with disabilities. Even if I wasn’t using it to describe someone with a disability, using language that is rooted in hate/bigotry is (last time I checked) super not fucking cool.

I used this word at the time of writing this song because I had no idea what it meant nor what it’s etymological roots were- which like, maybe don’t use words if you don’t know what they mean/where they come from??? I learned it where most people learn words like this- from getting called it in highschool. At the time I thought little of what people were saying to me and how I internalized it- so when I searched my memory for an insulting word that rhymed with “everlasting”, a memory of hushed judgemental tones over me trying to suppress my stimming in a quiet classroom tumbled into my mind. I didn’t know why I had been called it, only that it had hurt, and I thought this would make perfect sense for a song with that same intended effect to its fictional subject, none the wiser of what it truly meant or where the word came from.

Needless to say I regret it a lot and I think about it often. Nobody has mentioned this to me, nor pointed it out or tried to call me out or anything (likely because the song itself was never huge/viral), but I nonetheless felt like I needed to put this disclaimer here. I don’t like using language that implies something about me or my art that isn’t true, such as stances/feelings I might have about the use of words like that. It’s never acceptable to call someone a slur or to use a hateful term for them. I don’t want to perpetuate the casual use of words like this in any way, especially not through my music. It is ironic, in a way, that this was a song from the point of view of Dream, seeing as he has made it ABUNDANTLY clear what his stance on using hateful language related to disability is. It honestly makes me laugh a little bit to think about how this part of the song weighed so heavily on my conscience for so long, only for him to go and use the R slur with full confidence and then have the gall to defend himself for it after. Disgusting.

I’m not going to private/unlist the song because I feel like that would be disingenuous and would just feel like covering up a mistake instead of acknowledging and growing from it. I also know that a lot of people still really like this song and I don’t want to take it away from them because of a mistake I made. That’s why I’ve written this disclaimer, so that you know unequivocally that you should not use this word, and that I shouldn’t have either. That what you say matters, and you should always make sure you know what the words you’re saying mean, and where they come from. It’s okay to make mistakes: use them as a learning opportunity instead of doubling down on them and digging your heels in.

I have a long story of me joining the fandom. My friend once found out that we both watch Minecraft but she goes with english part of the community and I go with russian part. Than, for more than 4 month, she was sending me videos of Dream Team doing some strange challenges I didn't get and I was lying that I was watching them. But than we suddenly decided to meet up and it was a full day of me watching all the Dream Team content I could find. 14 hours in a row (I'm crazy, yeah). And than she showed me Tommy's lore from the very beginning. I was charmed by that boy but I still did not get all the point of the fandom. What is that? Guys who play Minecraft but it is a roleplay? What? And than my friend showed me this song. This absolutely incredible and so fucking good song that only from first chords I fell in love not only with your songs in general but with the whole fandom. I'm here to say thank you for your work and for especially this song. Despite we have Derivakat and CG5 this song is still my favourite and it will always be one cause only because of this small song I found a place where I should be. In Dream SMP/MCYT community.
