Back in the 1980s, my ex-wife worked on the cruise ships Independence and Constitution, which ran out of Honolulu.
One day she was on deck getting a breath of fresh air while the ship was off the Big Island, when a woman passenger approached her and asked "What time does the volcano go off?"
My ex didn't even pause before telling her "2 O'Clock."
It still astounds me how people confuse natural occurrences with scheduled entertainment.

I live 11 miles away and felt the rumble start at 11:30. I'm in zone 3 so were safe but when the vapors start it gets bad to breathe like 2018. So we'll see.

The terms Kīlauea and Halemaʻumaʻu are Hawaiian and refer to important geological and cultural landmarks:

1. Kīlauea: This is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, located on the Big Island of Hawaii. The name "Kīlauea" means "spewing" or "much spreading" in Hawaiian, referencing its frequent and widespread lava flows.

2. Halemaʻumaʻu: This is a crater within Kīlauea's summit caldera. The name "Halemaʻumaʻu" roughly translates to "house of the ʻamaʻu fern, " referring to a type of native fern that grows in the area. Culturally, Halemaʻumaʻu is considered the home of Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes and fire.

Together, Kīlauea Halemaʻumaʻu evokes both the geological significance of the volcano and its deep cultural and spiritual meaning in Hawaiian traditions.

I hope Kilauea remains the most observable effusive volcano for a long, long time.

I've had so many incredible encounters with lava on Kilauea but I've only seen fountains one time and that was out of puffer vents on the rim of Puu O'o. I'm away at the moment so I'm bummed I'm missing this. Remember when they had that wooden viewing platform that stuck out over the rim of Halemaumau? . 🤣
